This was my second time here and I still didn't get a chance see all I wanted to see! The Visitor's Center is a great place to start with a large gift/museum store, a cafeteria with pretty good food, ...  more »

A walk down the natural entrance is an amazing experience. You really get to experience the massive cavern you are headed down to see. You MUST be in relatively good shape to handle this. You are walk...  more »

We left from Las Cruces, NM and it is almost 3 hours drive. We went down into the cave in elevator quickly but came back on foot through the natural entrance. The duration of the visit, without rising, is about 45 minutes and the rise of 45 minutes (waiting to go up was 2 hours in elevator as an elevator was broken). There are bathrooms in the Grotto downstairs and they sell water and some food. It's well lit to appreciate the different limestone forms. The trails in the cave are asphalt, but it takes good shoes to do not slide and especially up the slopes. It's not too cold, downstairs. A hoodie sweater does well. The rise is a good interesting to do hike. Every cave in the world is different. It stands out by the size of its rooms and the shapes of stalactites and stalagmites. My Favorites are the cave of Luray, Virginia, Lacave in the Dordogne and Pech Merle in France.

Where to stay in Carlsbad Caverns National Park

The only option for sleeping within Carlsbad Caverns National Park is to grab a free permit and pitch your own tent in the backcountry. You can, however, find a handful of places to stay in White's City, which sits at the park's entrance. Here you'll find campgrounds, a few economy hotels, a couple of dining establishments, and other entertainment options. About 40 km (25 mi) up the road, the small city of Carlsbad offers more choice for accommodations. Hotels here tend to show their age, but most are clean.
