  • The bat flight is a awe inspiring sight. Seeing hundreds of thousands of bats leaving the cave is amazing. In the time leading up to the bats, the rangers give a great deal of information about the ca...  more »

  • Carlsbad Caverns has been on my 'Bucket List' with good reason. You go down 750 feet in an elevator. The door opens up to a breath taking area called The Big Room Route. Stalactites and stalagmites are abundant, colorful, growths of rugged beauty created by 'Mother Nature'. What an incredible place to enjoy. The Big Room Route is a mile and the brochure says it takes 1 1/2 hours to walk the path with handrails. It took us 2 hours because I couldn't resist the endless picture taking opportunities that are there. To sum up the experience...WOW!
  • The trip from Texas was worth it. Had a great time exploring the caverns. It gets a little chilly inside so bring a light jacket just in case. Definitely worth the drive. Spectacular opportunities for pictures.
  • We stayed late to watch the bats fly and it was well worth the wait. The natural entrance is definitely the path to take. Bring a flashlight or get one there.
  • Huge dimensions Feels totally at ease while in smaller caves I feel oppressed. So a must go for claustrophobic people. Went down using the elevator. You can go up anytime when you feel the need. not crowdy in May.
  • If you do anything in NM, go to Carlsbad Caverns. It is by far the best National monument I have been to. Pictures and stories don't do it justice, this one you HAVE to see in person. Well worth the drive. I went in February so they're on winter hours and only a few guided tours are available each day, but there weren't 400 total people through here all day on a Saturday. Summer hours get crazy with over 4,000 (four thousand) visitors per day, which is just bonkers. Plan on spending the entire day here, especially in the summer, and take a guided tour. The history and grandeur of the caverns is incredible. If you arrive early and get out by 200pm, head south to Guadalupe Mtn., about 25 miles southwest in Texas. Guadalupe is another great spot for hiking and you could easily spend a day there as well.

Where to stay in Carlsbad Caverns National Park

The only option for sleeping within Carlsbad Caverns National Park is to grab a free permit and pitch your own tent in the backcountry. You can, however, find a handful of places to stay in White's City, which sits at the park's entrance. Here you'll find campgrounds, a few economy hotels, a couple of dining establishments, and other entertainment options. About 40 km (25 mi) up the road, the small city of Carlsbad offers more choice for accommodations. Hotels here tend to show their age, but most are clean.
