Big Room, Carlsbad Caverns National Park

(4.9/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Explore Big Room, the largest cave in Carlsbad cavern, in a self-guided tour of the natural limestone formations, stalactites, and stalagmites. You'll see Bottomless Pit, Giant Dome, Rock of Ages, and Painted Grotto. For quick access to the cave, enter the visitor center, which has elevators to the cave. Rent an audio guide here to learn about the geology, formation, and history of the cave, as well as the specific sites. For a longer and more challenging walk to the cave, take the natural entrance route, which covers a 228.6 m (750 ft) descent via switchbacks. • The tour buses pull up at about 10am, so plan to be at the Visitor's center when it opens. There are only two functional elevators at present so unless you are hiking into the cavern through the natur...  more »
  • Loved both paid tour and self guided tour. This is an underground fairyland. Beautiful. We also took the little nature walk outside and enjoyed that too. My adult kids walked down. To steep for us.
  • The big room was awesome! I wish I had just taken the elevator down though. It all starts looking the same until you get to the big room.
