The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is an aviation museum located at the Cape May Airport in Lower Township, in Cape May County, New Jersey, United States.FacilitiesThe Cape May Airport, which hosts the museum, was originally constructed by the U.S. Navy from 1941-1942. Commissioned in April 1943 as Naval Air Station Rio Grande, the field was so named due to its proximity to the community of Rio Grande, New Jersey. Due to problems with mail, telegram and telephone service, caused in part by confusion with Rio Grande City, Texas, the Navy opted to rename the airfield as Naval Air Station Wildwood in June 1943. The air station remained in operation as an active naval installation throughout World War II, primarily focused on training operations for Naval Aviators and enlisted Naval Aircrewmen in dive bomber, torpedo bomber and fighter aircraft. Following the end of World War II, the airfield was declared excess to military requirements and was converted to a civilian airport. The museum is located in the airport's Hangar #1, which is typical of the design of many U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps aircraft hangars of the 1940s, many of which are still in use today at both active Naval Air Stations, Marine Corps Air Stations and Coast Guard Air Stations across the United States, as well as other civilian airports that formerly served as air stations. The museum's hangar is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • This was a must on my list, so after seeing many places on my wife's list we finally arrived. I was as expected, but wish some of the items on display had information attached.

  • The Naval Air Station Wildwood hangar is loaded with military aircraft that is available to touch, and in some cases, sit in. I am no airplane buff, but I was fascinated by the Russian Mig, the Grumma...  read more »
  • The kids really loved this place. It is full of old WW2 aircraft that you can sit in and enjoy. The kids had a blast. You'll spend about 1.5 hours exploring if you take your time. It's indoors but no AC (hangar) so when we went it was 95° outside so still uncomfortable inside. That's just a warning- we expected that.
  • Great place to take the kids when it is to hot or raining. The exhibits are great and you may even be lucky enough to see some planes take off and land.
  • I had a great time. I did feel admission price was steep for the exhibits that were on display. But the money is for a good cause. All in all a good visit.
  • Interesting museum with a few very interesting aircraft. On the day we visited, there seemed to be only 2 or 3 staff members working, which may have hampered others who would have appreciated more of a guided tour experience.
  • A great place to visit. kids and adults alike will love it!
