Climbing the 199 steps of Cape May Lighthouse is a rite of passage on the Jersey Shore. The view from atop the lighthouse covers all points of interest along the shore from north to south and east and west. Bring your camera and a bottle of water for the ascent. The "Oil House" near the base of the lighthouse houses the visitor center with a museum that shares the lighthouse's story. • We go to the lighthouse often. The view is amazing from the top if the walk. There are also so many other things to see at the lighthouse park -- the bird walk, the nature gallery, the museum, the WWI...  more »
  • The views are breath-taking once you get up there. Not for the faint of heart/panic attackers but an easy enough climb for this pre-senior citizen. There are landings along the way. Lighthouse within ...  more »
  • Wanted to kill an hour or two on an 'iffy' morning when we weren't sure if it was going to rain or not. We thought $8 just to walk to the top of the lighthouse was not worth it to us, but walking arou...  more »

  • Very cool place to visit. We went on a winter day so there was hardly any people there for a Sunday. The staff was very friendly and the interpretive center was quite informative with live snakes and a few reptiles to see and lots of historical data about the area. Then down on to the beach to check out the bunker. Nice.place to spend the afternoon. Will go again someday when I return to the area.
  • I return to this lighthouse often when visiting Cape May. It's not really an expensive venture (currently $8 for an adult) when one considers what the maintenance and insurance must cost. Beautiful views in all directions of Cape May and the bay and in my experience, no one has limited the amount of time a tourist can stay to take pictures.
  • This was a great experience. We got our exercise walking to the lighthouse, up it, then back to our room. Beautiful view!
  • My whole family had a wonderful time. The view from the top of the lighthouse is incredible. I had been here once before about 25 years ago with my parents, and now my kids got to experience it and had a great time. They have a very rare wild caught white black rat snake in the museum near the large parking lot which is worth checking out. This is not an albino, with red eye and are more common. The body of this snake is white, but the eyes are normal color. The staff at the park is super friendly and knowledgeable. I recommend everyone check it out!
  • Visited here a few years ago, amazing views.

Where to stay in Cape May

Choosing where to stay on Cape May remains simple because most accommodations lie steps from Beach Avenue (which, as its name suggests, runs along the cape's stretch of sand). Even choosing your style of accommodation is uncomplicated--inns and bed and breakfasts situated inside Victorian houses encompass nearly the entire range of choices. You can opt for a cottage if you prefer self-service. Budget-wise you'll find the most options in the mid-range and higher end, but a few value-driven choices exist too. Book early if you plan to visit in summer.
