Upheaval Dome, Canyonlands National Park

(4.1/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web)
Upheaval Dome is an impact structure, the deeply eroded remnants of an impact crater, in Canyonlands National Park southwest of the city of Moab, Utah, in the United States. The crater is located in the Island in the Sky section of the park, and is approximately 42 miles (67 km) by vehicle from Moab.It is approximately 5 km in diameter and the crater is estimated to be less than 170 million years old (Jurassic or younger.) The crater is clearly visible on the surface as bright brown and black concentric rings.Stratigraphically, the oldest formation exposed in the center of the dome is the Permian Organ Rock Shale. This is overlain by the Permian White Rim Sandstone. Both are sometimes considered part of the Cutler Formation. Overlying these are the Triassic Moenkopi Formation (which is bounded top and bottom by unconformities), the Chinle Formation, the cliff-forming Wingate Sandstone, the Kayenta Formation, and the crossbedded Triassic-Jurassic Navajo Sandstone.

  • The not just moderate hike leads to the crater through an interesting landscape. The encountered rock formations, especially when looking into the crater, need more background knowledge. The turquoise formations are a bit irritating. Come the fact of a meteor impact or special salts or metallic elements. Have no same spots in the Park found in any case. The winding drive there was also very nice, and next time I must keep better forward me or edit, to know more precisely what we have seen.

  • Is a lunar impact crater that is not sure what caused it. There is the theory of "bubble" that says the area has accumulated a ball of salt that was surrounded by Earth and later the salt would have been washed away or other officer any, leaving in its place a crater. Another hypothesis is that of the impact of a meteorite that today is considered the most likely. The trail to get there is considered easy, and only takes 10 minutes walk to reach the first lookout. In total about 45 minutes round-trip. At the beginning of the trail there is a parking, bathroom and tables with benches.
