Lee Crutchfield is on a mission to rescue animals in need. He currently holds a license for up to 500 animals, although Aloha Safari Zoo tops out at about 400. Lee works non-stop to provide animals a refuge where they can peacefully live out the remainder of their lives. About 400 animals of various species, most exotic, have found a sanctuary in an educational zoo that Crutchfield, his family and a small team of dedicated individuals have labored to create. The zoo is over 60-acres and opened to the public January 2010.

Lee is passionate about the all the animals “I built everything you see, dug the ponds and all,” he says. All of the habitats are constructed at hurricane strength and accredited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Every pen is also equipped with ultraviolet lighting, which helps to provide the animals with Vitamin B.

Caring for the animals is crucial, since many of them have been rescued from poor health and habitats. Three area veterinarians aid the zoo with medical care and health certificate exams. “it’s a unique opportunity and learning experience for the area’s children, families and schools. There are a lot of different species that most people would never have the opportunity to seem,” says Brian Garrett, a veterinarian with the Animal Hospital of Fayetteville.

This working zoo is a true family affair. Crutchfield’s family all have roles in the daily activities. “This is God’s gift to me. Every single day, I get to do the work I love,” says Crutchfield.

  • We drove from Virginia to this safari park on our way to the beach. The lady at the gate was very nice and even checked to see if we enjoyed our visit afterwards. There is a snack bar and on...  more »
  • Aloha Safari Zoo was actually a pleasant surprise. I love the fact that they give you popcorn to feed the animals as soon as you walk in. They have a vast mixture of different animals and you can even get up close and personal and feed the giraffes for a dollar. This one monkey would catch the popcorn as I threw it his way, so cool to watch that. I think what separates this place from a lot of others is just how close you can get to all the animals, most of them are right there in your face. They also had about three different tigers and a baby tiger. They put the baby tiger up for the day earlier than they close so make sure you get there early enough. We got there at 3pm and we missed it. Also, a bonus for us was that they had a small room dedicated to mothers that want to sit down with their newborns. The room provided just enough shade and with the fan blowing was able to cool off both of them pretty quick. It also had a rocking chair, some small toys to play with, and a changing table. But keep in mind I think there’s only one of these rooms. My advice would be to not bring your newborn to the zoo because of how hot it gets but if you’re like us and have to, they have that room.
  • Love this zoo rescue, always have a great time here with the kids. So many animals have been rescued, I have been coming here for years. The only reason I give it 4 stars and not 5 is due to the price increase over the years. For my family to go it is over 60$, and that’s before the snacks. I understand that they have to support the animals and it’s a rescue. But, what I don’t understand is how the price jumped so much in 2 years... Or why they only honor a military discount once a week? We have tons of veterans in our community, so I don’t understand. But, I guess you only enjoy your freedom on Sunday, so that’s why you only get the discount then? Not sure. If it wasn’t so expensive or they offered a season pass even, I would take my family way more often
  • I love this zoo! I have been twice and have loved it each time! The staff is great and you can tell they really care about the animals. The animal interactions are so cool and fun for the kids. If you go, you have to feed the giraffes! I can't wait to go again!
  • Visited today and I was impressed with the number and diversity of the animals on-site. Staff was very friendly and down to earth. Kids had a great time and really enjoyed the Zoo-Keeper show. Perfect weekend activity for a family or couple. Highly recommend.
  • At first I didn't know what to think. But after walking through and seeing the animals and the people that work here, I loved it! All of these animals are rescues with incredible stories. Everyone that works here has a kind heart and a true love for these animals. I will continue to visit and support this zoo!
