Moonstone Beach Dr, Cambria

4.7
#2 of 16 in Things to do in Cambria
Drive along Moonstone Beach Dr and make your way down the coastline surrounded by sand dunes, beachfront homes, and sweeping ocean views. Running right next to Highway 1, the route represents a more scenic alternative, bringing you closer to the sea itself and allowing you to drive at a slower pace. Stop along your way to wander the numerous stretches of boardwalk throughout the area and take in the sandy cliffs and trees that form the landscape around you. Keep your eyes peeled and you may even get to view a colony of seals snoozing on the beach. • This is such a lovely boardwalk along the coast of Cambria at Moonstone Beach. You enjoy the dramatic coastline with breathtaking views on this 2.85 mile round-trip boardwalk (not a strenuous walk). T...  more »
  • A great place to drive along the ocean and see the sunset. The road is narrow, so watch out for pedestrians crossing the street.  more »
  • With Highway 1 blocked, you can always substitute this end. Start and Cambria, stay at Moonstone and drive up. Lot's of pretty stuff, plenty of souvenirs, and throw in a Castle if you want. Stroll the...  more »

  • Like all of the hotels on these little coastal towns that dot Highway 1, this is a more of a motel. In fact, it was a Best Western not so very long ago. I say this because you shouldn't come here expecting modern luxury. This is much better. It's shabby chic, non-pretentious spot. The rooms are super clean, there is a working gas fireplace, the beds are comfy, and the free breakfast is do-able. There is a nice pool area on the back of the property. But the rates sure are high during peak times. Spring for the "Superior King Oceanfront with Patio". Absolutely worth the extra money. There is a small road between the hotel and the beach area, but there are very few cars. We left our door open at night and didn't hear a sound. The beach itself has a spectacular boardwalk that you can spend hours walking up and down. You're close to Hearst Castle, and also to quite a few wineries. Within a few miles are plenty of delicious restaurants. Staff is friendly and helpful. I'd definitely stay again.
  • I loved Fireside Inn! It's right on the gorgeous & spectacular Moonstone Beach, couldn't believe we were right there on the oceanfront! The hotel itself is just lovely: spacious room, very comfy bed & pillows, a fireplace and even bathrobes! Our room was on the beachfront (126) so we slept with windows open, letting the ocean sound lull us to sleep. Not sure if all rooms have this feature, but ours had a big bathtub with jets. It was soooo nice! Everything was clean and pleasant and the staff was very friendly (and very conscious of the California drought)! Also, I like that it is a one story hotel where you can pull your car almost to your room door. Oh, and when I booked I didn't realize a free hot breakfast was provided, which was a great amenity. The hotel has a heated pool and a jacuzzi but with our own bathtub with jets we didn't feel like venturing outside :) In the morning we took nice walks on the beachfront, which is a breathtaking nature preserve with dramatic cliffs. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and little ground squirrels entertained us constantly. We saw a sea otter in the waves! The night we checked in we watched sun set over the ocean. It was idyllic. Can't wait to return to Fireside Inn and I highly recommend it for your stay in Cambria! Many thanks to the hotel staff for making us feel very welcome!
