Storybook Mountain Vineyards, Calistoga

4.9
#14 of 26 in Wineries in Calistoga
Storybook Mountain has established a world-wide reputation for the consistently high quality of its wines. The wine tradition began at Storybook Mountain in the early 1880's when its red clay-loam soils were first planted to Zinfandel and Cabernet. Here the ideal match of terroir and grape allows these varietals to express their full potential.

Storybook Mountain's sought-after wines are hand-crafted from the estate's own grapes grown without the use of insecticides or herbicides. They are aged at least twelve months in the best French, Hungarian and American oak barrels into the mineral rich volcanic rock underlying the hand tended vineyards.

Proprietors Jerry and Sigrid Seps' wines are famed for intensity and elegance. These well balanced wines have the appeal to be enjoyed in their youth, the depth to age gracefully, and the quality to be ranked among the finest wines in the world.

  • After tasting wines all over the world, we were amazed that a wine "tasting" meant a tour of the grounds a visit to their storage facility and an interminable dialogue about their history. Though mild...  more »
  • I visited this winery only because of a strong referral from a friend who went there a few months earlier and said I must go to “Storybook”. Kind of like I’m telling you to go to Storybook. If you are...  more »
  • What a great visit! We didn't know much about Storybook before our tour there but we fell in love with their story and their wines. Pam was our tour and tasting host, and you could tell she loves her ...  more »

  • Fantastic wine tasting experience! One of our favorites!! Tastings and tours are private, just your group and one of the 7 employees of the winery. You get a non rushed tour of the grounds, learn about the history of the winery from the inception of Calistoga to present day and finish out by touring the hand dug caves and a tasting in the caves. Great experience for sure.
  • Colleen was very accommodating. Great service and super friendly! The Zins were deliciously flavorful. Thank God the vineyards weren't affected by the fire 😊
  • Beautiful grounds and hillside vineyards. There is a cool story about the Redwood trees that are near their caves. Storybook's Zin's are lovely, not jammy fruit bombs, but structured and balanced. Family run winery, affordable and awesome wine. If you like a more intimate setting for tasting wine, visit Storybook.
  • We bought a case a few years ago and although pricier than we normally spend on Zinfandels, these are worth every penny. We also visited the vineyard and were given a tour by the son-in-law and tastings with the daughter of the owner. It was really a family feel and they make AWESOME wines.
  • We didn’t have an appt but called from the gate. I’m so embarrassed I don’t remember the name of the woman who answered and agreed to give us a tasting. She met us and our service dog, Bear, as we arrived from the parking lot. Bear couldn’t come in the cave but was most welcome to hang out outside in the shade. We must have tasted 7-8 wines. She was extremely knowledgeable, told us the story of Storybook which, I concur with others, is fascinating. I particularly loved the cab and viognier even though I know they are known for zin. My partner, who has by far the superior palate really appreciated the rose. Beautiful hillsides and scenery.
