Storybook Mountain Vineyards, Calistoga

5.0
#13 of 26 in Wineries in Calistoga
Winery / Vineyard Food & Drink
Storybook Mountain has established a world-wide reputation for the consistently high quality of its wines. The wine tradition began at Storybook Mountain in the early 1880's when its red clay-loam soils were first planted to Zinfandel and Cabernet. Here the ideal match of terroir and grape allows these varietals to express their full potential.

Storybook Mountain's sought-after wines are hand-crafted from the estate's own grapes grown without the use of insecticides or herbicides. They are aged at least twelve months in the best French, Hungarian and American oak barrels into the mineral rich volcanic rock underlying the hand tended vineyards.

Proprietors Jerry and Sigrid Seps' wines are famed for intensity and elegance. These well balanced wines have the appeal to be enjoyed in their youth, the depth to age gracefully, and the quality to be ranked among the finest wines in the world.

  • The story of the vineyard is almost as cool as the views that you will see when you are there. Lovely wines and great people.
  • Since I didn't read a review which mentioned Pam, I thought I would now! :) This place is run by 9 people and it is rated #1 in Napa Valley. Pam is an amazing tour guide, and took so much time to tell us the story and answer all the questions - thanks so much, #9! Rick is wonderful for the tasting experience. Yes, they have the most amazing Zinfandels, and being the biggest fan of Zin, I just loved Storybook. Also being a fan of the Grimm books as well as the TV Show, I could relate to this history too. I've been there twice already this year, and will probably come back again! The tasting fee is waived with purchase, and I would highly recommend the 2012 Estate Reserve and the 2013 Eastern Exposures, which are the two best wines, although each one I tried was poetry in a bottle, as someone precisely described it.
  • Drinking a bottle of 1992 Storybook Zin tonight. It is absolutely fabulous. Glad we kept that case and hope to enjoy a few more bottles. Tonight it was with a simple roasted chicken, kale salad, and Marcella Hazan's pasta with rosemary. Life is good.
  • Shocking that this place hasn't been reviewed yet here. We took the tour on a beautiful afternoon in June. I highly recommend the tour. It was different than the normal valley floor walk thru the vines. The caves are great with lots of history. The tasting was excellent. Our tour guide Rick made sure we were exposed to many great vintages.
  • Beautiful estate and highly informative tour. Excellent wines.
