  • We took our young daughters to see this fort. What a surprise for people from urban areas. Not only were we permitted to wander freely about the grounds and buildings, but the only locked parts were locked durin the fort's active life, such as the armory and the dispensery. The girls played with the toys in the officers' quarters that had that belonged to children who lived there; I tried on a full length near coat hanging in a closet. On a table, rested an unframed watercolor by an officer's wife that depicted a town across a field from the bedroom window: the town burned down over a century ago. ...This is a must see. Most spots are recreations. This one is maintained against time. Even the soapmaker's scraps were where they fell.
