Heritage Museum Reviews

This is small in size but big in heritage for those who came before us. It also offers special events that are interesting. more »

I've only ever been here for the haunted house. I can't speak to anything else. Highly recommended for a family good time! more »

Loved the tour---- so much history relevant to early Florida. I hope the city provides funding support to maintain the house. With the proper marketing, this would be a sought after destination. more »

Absolutely outstanding! I would recommend everyone going!! The history that this place holds is amazing. The staff was attentive and the place was well kept and clean. Our family had such a great time on our ghost tour that we can wait to visit again.

Wow, what a great site to visit! So much to see in one historical house, I will be going back because it is just amazing and nostalgic. Bring a camera. And the knowledgeable volunteers make it even better. Thanks again!

We had one of the most enjoyable days ever visiting the haunted May Stringer House Museum, perched on one of the highest hills in the area that overlooks the town, located at 601 Museum Court in Brooksville, Florida. A Victorian era three-story house with seven gables is bursting with over 11,000 artifacts, donated from local families, and spread throughout fourteen rooms. Our visit was greatly enhanced by the charming docents leading the hour long tours, who are all members of the Hernando Historical Museum Association that runs the museum. The four ladies we met today really know their history and expertly answered all our questions. There are two other historic buildings in Brooksville managed by the same association - the 1885 train depot and the Countryman one-room school house, which is a reconstruction of the first school built in the area in the 1850's. I have yet to visit these other two locations. There are evening Ghost Tours at the May Stringer House and at the Train depot. If you're a paranormal investigator, hopeful to communicate with one of the ghosts still in residence then you're in luck because both facilities are available overnight for a fee. How spooky is that! The association raises money to keep up the three historic properties by holding a variety of fundraisers, the biggest being a civil war re-enactment held in the winter months. The May Stringer House is a must see place and the tour is a bargain at only $5.00. There are three floors in the house, which are included in the tour, but only the ground floor is handicap accessible, with a ramp that leads up from the parking lot. On the grounds at the back is a fully accessible paved memory garden. It's a lovely place to take a quiet stroll and admire all the little angel memorials (dotted among a wide variety of plants and trees) which are dedicated to some of the babies who died in the area.

Went there after planning on it and driving a few hours. Website, smart phone, sign on the door, message machine all said was opening at 12. Well by 12:15 was still closed. 3 carloads if people sitting and waiting. I called around and got a call back. They said they weren't going to open as they were afraid there may be trouble in town.... "And we want to keep our volunteers safe'. The town was so quiet that it was like a cemetery. Day was ruined. For no reason.

We were there back in 2012 It was Awesome...We got a lot of pictures and voices on our camera and phones that we downloaded, and sent some of the pictures in of the Blue Room to a lady named Bonnie. We would love to come back to visit and see what we can catch again with our equipment that we updated. We missed being there for Halloween event to help out because our van at the time was given us prombles , I would have loved to have helped with that... I don't know if they are still doing the Halloween attractions , but would like to find out that was in 2012... Our names are Carolyn and Mike... Hope to be there again soon 😀
