Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Brooklyn

4.0
The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is a double-decked suspension bridge that connects the New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn. It spans the Narrows, a body of water connecting the relatively protected upper bay with the larger, wide open lower bay.The bridge is named for the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, who in 1524 became the first documented European explorer to enter New York Harbor and the Hudson River. It has a central span of 4260ft and was the longest suspension bridge in the world from its completion in 1964 until it was surpassed by the Humber Bridge in the United Kingdom in 1981. It has the 13th longest main span in the world, and the longest in the Americas. Its towers can be seen throughout New York City and in New Jersey. The bridge marks the gateway to New York Harbor. All ships arriving at the Port of New York and New Jersey pass underneath the bridge and must therefore be built to accommodate the clearance under it. Since 1976, the Staten Island end of the bridge has been the starting point of the New York City Marathon.

  • Linking staten island with... immense brookling bridge where run through dozens of cars of back and forth at all times. Shocking.

  • You can view it up close along the sea wall, drive over it, but you cannot walk on it. A nice picture when the freighters are lined up on their approach into New York Harbor. All I can really say, "It...  more »

  • Great new bridge, way to go! Beautiful, functional (more function than beauty) & built in record time. Seventeen years of traffic delay soon gone for the most part. Thanks and keep up the good work. Please drive safely. Love one another, is some times so very hard when in a car. So even more important to be responsible with our intent.
  • Very Nice Bridge to travel on. The view of Manhattan and the ocean is great. Only problem is rush hour traffic, and trying to get to the Belt Parkway is a bit of a pain. Otherwise I love this bridge
  • We used to travel via George Washington bridge when going from NJ to NY. We started avoiding that and used this one as this is very much faster compared to traffic on Washington bridge. This bridge has great architecture as well.
  • I'm giving 5 stars for the beauty of the bridge, not the toll price. It's way too expensive. $17. When you are on the bridge stay always alert, don't be distracted, because cars make sudden stops especially the lane going to Belt Parkway toward JFK. There is a sign on the bridge saying the sudden stops too. I've been hit twice from the back. You can enjoy the Verrazano Bridge view from Staten Island Beach or Forts such like Fort Tompkins or Fort Wadsworth or from Brooklyn side Shore Road Park and Parkway
  • Don't mean to be a stinkbug(?), but I really thought this bridge was longer. However, I shouldn't be complaining, because it is 13700'.
