New York Aquarium, Brooklyn

2.3
#5 of 8 in Parks in Brooklyn
See diverse marine life at New York Aquarium, an urban wildlife oasis. The aquarium is among the oldest of its kind in the United States, and it displays marine species from all over the world. You can also see coral reefs, penguins, piranhas, sea otters, and many more creatures. In good weather, the aquarium's sea lions and their trainers perform daily shows for the visitors. Additional entertainment is provided by the aquarium's 4-D cinema. All attractions are available with general admission. For an additional fee, you can park at the aquarium's parking lot, but the complex is also easily accessible by bus and subway. • I was seduced by the pictures, and I became ill. Firstly the Aquarium was in reforms (and in my opinion this should be explained in the entry), so some tanks were closed to visitors. It is a small place, in less than 1 hour you complete the tour. Honestly? There is nothing spectacular, is a disposable (even more in winter, for being on the Beach the wind is freezing-and this is reflected also in the animals, which are hidden among the rocks, due to the cold). Highlight only the otters (are cute, it's nice to see them swimming, but the tank was really dirty) and the show with the sea lions (don't sit around the pool, run the risk of getting wet, a little further up you see the show better too). How far from Manhattan, if you're time is not worth it. Now if you're around, be aware that is a super simple (less than perhaps any Brazilian Aquarium).

  • Came here because it was so cold out thinking it would be indoors. Some of the aquariums are inside. Some are outside and most are closed when it is really cold out. We were in and out of the aquarium...  more »
  • We went with family and thought it was a better experience. Many attractions were under construction. Not much to see but we felt it was overpriced. Kids liked the place but not your ordinary Aquarium...  more »

  • Love this aquarium! When we lived in New York, used to visit it every other week. My kids had fun every time we went there. Sea lion show is amazing!!! Every Friday after 3pm you can enter for as low as $1 !!! Well, you can always donate more if you wish.
  • They are in the process of renovating half of the Aquarium, as a result the ticket prices were reduced by about 50%. The fish in the Aquarium are diverse and some of them are very interesting. It is a great educational place to go for a few hours with children. The Sea Lion loves to "laugh" and they have a 4-D theatre that kids also love. I personally got the season passes to all the Zoos under this umbrella which includes the Bronx, Queens, Central Park Zoo.
  • The spectacular sea lion show gets obscured by the simplicity and lack of originality. Overall, the place needs to pay more attention to cleanliness, which is unacceptable for a marine life captivity center. I appreciate the good will and mission of this aquarium, but it definitely should take note on things that can be improved. I advice the visitor to go on the free entry times and donate a little in order to improve the aquarium.
  • One of my favorite places! They have been renovating this past summer, not sure when the shark tank will be back. It's a little expensive to get in. Definitely take pictures and eat before going in, food cost over the top. Then enjoy the boardwalk and beach afterwards.
  • On a hot day after walking the boarwdalka nd riding the historic rides it is great to be able to go inside to the air conditioned aquarium on the boardwalk. When i was there a few years ago they had Beluga whales and all sorts of other marine life. Basic snack food and fast food also available. Lots of fun for kids.

Where to stay in Brooklyn

To enjoy views of the Manhattan skyline and have easy foot access to most of the borough's major attractions, stay in Brooklyn's downtown area. The borough's main tourism district, this area offers both luxurious accommodations for visitors wishing to splurge during their stay, as well as more economical lodgings for those traveling on a limited budget. If you don’t mind driving or taking the subway to most tourist sites, consider one of the neighborhoods outside Brooklyn's central area, such as Williamsburg or Prospect Park.
