Dumbo, Brooklyn

4.5
#1 of 9 in Neighborhoods in Brooklyn
Short for "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass," Dumbo is a bustling community on the shore of the East River. Thanks to the efforts of Joy Glidden, founder of of the DUMBO arts center and co-founder of the DUMBO Art Under the Bridge Festival, as well as other urban developers, the once industrial area was successfully transformed into a waterfront hub for artists and entrepreneurs. The rich arts and culture scene includes everything from small galleries to large performance venues, as well as book and music stores. The neighborhood also features trendy shops, bars, and restaurants, including great pizza places. As you wander between local businesses, many of which are housed in revamped industrial buildings, take in views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline. The relatively small neighborhood is easy to explore on foot, and it is accessible from Manhattan via subway and ferry. • There’s not enough time to spend here. The views and the artsy spots to visit are inmensurable and incomparable. Absolutely recommend going here.  more »
  • The photos reflect what there is to see, including the bridges, small beaches, the carousel but not noise - incredible DIN of the crossings of metro on the fairly permanent bridge, and then work around. A little disappointed I must say!

Where to stay in Brooklyn

To enjoy views of the Manhattan skyline and have easy foot access to most of the borough's major attractions, stay in Brooklyn's downtown area. The borough's main tourism district, this area offers both luxurious accommodations for visitors wishing to splurge during their stay, as well as more economical lodgings for those traveling on a limited budget. If you don’t mind driving or taking the subway to most tourist sites, consider one of the neighborhoods outside Brooklyn's central area, such as Williamsburg or Prospect Park.
