Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn

4.2
In 1984, Associated Press correspondent Steve Hindy returned from a six-year stint in the Middle East and settled in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood. Hindy had caught the homebreweing bug from diplomats stationed in Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait where alcoholic beverages were forbidden. With his downstairs neighbor, Tom Potter, Hindy quit his job and founded The Brooklyn Brewery in 1988. And thus their flagship brew, Brooklyn Lager, began its steady march to recognition as one of America's highest regarded beers.

By 1996, with renowned traditional beer expert Garrett Oliver at the helm as Brewmaster, The Brooklyn Brewery brought brewing back to the once mighty brewing center of Brooklyn. The Brewery is poised to continue to churn out some of the most creative and leading styles of beer in America. Stop by and visit us, why don't you?

  • We visited the brewery in the late afternoon. The building is very typical. The visit begins with explanations of tastings and 4 types of beers brewed by them. A little history of the company and a brief tour in the production area, they have other d in l NY State. A free drink is available per person. Possibility to drink other beers at the bar against payment. Really nice but please understand English, otherwise it will be kinda hard. Recommend.

  • I honestly do not understand why this place gets such high ratings. I do understand though that it’s popular, so was expecting a wait. We stood in line for at least 45 minutes (without someone telling us why) and once we finally got in, the lady at the token register (yes, you have to get tokens to get beer) was too busy doing “other stuff” and seemed very grumpy. Not knowing that the crowd of people was the line for the actual beer, we walked over to the seating area which actually seems nice. Only then we realized that the wait for getting a beer was probably another 30 minutes! I’m happy that I saved a thirsty fellow patient visitor a wait for the token line as I immediately sold him my tokens. We left as soon as we could and enjoyed a delicious Brooklyn Brewery beer at a nearby rooftop bar! Because yes: I love the beers you make!
  • We went for the small batch tour on Thursday night while visiting NYC. The tour is reasonably priced, $10 per person, but you get a glass to keep and 4 pours, which probably equates to 2 beers each. It's fun to hear about the history and success they've had since starting about 30 years ago. They have a fun bar set up with games, including corn hole, and an N64 with Goldeneye set up, for anyone wanting to take a trip down nostalgia lane.
  • Fun time. You get to try brews here that are experimental. They sit you down, pour drinks, and tell you the story of the brewery then take you on a short tour. Glad we went. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Cheers!
  • Basic at best in terms of service. The beer was cool, i respect the brew master, and brewers, but staff sucks. In the middle of asking a question, the tour guide looked at me and just walked away . Even the co tour guide was confused. I dont like spending my money at places which the staff feels pretentious. Alright beer, but terrible experience with service and staff.
  • Friendly staff, pretty decent variety in the selection of beers on tap. Short but informative mini tour of the Brewery on the weekends. Expect some wait time for the tour, so grab some tokens and get to tasting.
