Breckenridge Golf Club, Breckenridge

4.1
#3 of 61 in Golf in Colorado
The Town of Breckenridge can boast that it is the only municipality in the world to own a Jack Nicklaus designed, 27-hole golf course. The course opened for play in 1985. During the summer 2001 golf season, the Town opened another nine holes also designed by Nicklaus and every bit as challenging as the original 18-holes. The new Elk nine as it is named, offers more elevation change than the Bear and Beaver nines.

Since the opening of the course, national and regional honors have been bestowed on Breckenridge. Honors awarded by the Colorado Golfer (the State Golf Newspaper) have included; Best Mountain Course, and Toughest Mountain Course. Golf Digest "Places to Play" rates Breckenridge as a 4 1/2 Star Facility, and as one of their top "Upscale Places To Play" in the nation. In May 2011, Golfweek rated Breckenridge as one of the "Top 50 Municipal Courses" in the nation. The course is also Zagat rated.

The golf course is situated in a beautiful mountain valley. The clubhouse sits at an elevation of 9,324 feet. At this elevation the golf ball flies farther and straighter than at lower elevations, as there is less air resistance. The air not only allows you to hit the ball farther, but also offers temperatures that make you forget about the heat of the summer. Typical daytime summer temperatures range from 65 degrees to 80 degrees. Quite rarely will the temperature exceed 80.

The course has five sets of tees so that each golfer may select the challenge equal to their game. From the Nicklaus Tees on the Beaver/Bear rotation, the course plays 7,266 yards and has a course rating of 73.9 with a slope rating of 147. A challenge for even the best golfer. Each set of tees plays to a par 72.

The Breckenridge course has 3 nine hole courses called Bear, Elk and Beaver. I choose Elk for no other reason than I liked the name. I don't think I got lucky with my choice as I bet all 3 are spectac...  more »

The course is in great shape however be prepared to sit back and wait - speed of play is slow and lots of time waiting to hit shots. Players assistants did little or nothing to speed along groups.  more »

So funny, I just read another review that sounds identical to mine. All day long me and my son were excited to golf Breckenridge without the crowd, so we waited till about 2 hours before sunset to go. We got there and the cart guys greeted us and loaded up our cart, but when we walked in, we went from happy to sad within minutes of talking with the big shot who runs the pro shop. At first, I thought he was kidding when he said we couldn't golf, but he did not smile one bit and was a big jerk in the way he said "You can't golf now". I asked him why and he said it was to late. Little did he know that I have golfed Breckenridge in the past at much later times and there was still 2 hours left until sunset. Of course I tried to argue, but he was so rude and then brought his buddy into the conversation who said the last tee time was 6:30pm even though it does not get dark till 8:30pm. As we walked back out with our heads down, my son kept asking me why we can't golf and sadly, I just didn't have an answer. The cart guys even seemed confused when we got our clubs off the cart and began the walk of shame back to our car. Looking back on it, maybe that guy was having a bad day, but there is no excuse for how rude he was when he told me we could not golf. He was a total jerk about it and did not have to be like that. I am totally disappointed with my interaction with the Breckenridge Pro Shop crew.

Although the course was very good, I will never play here again. Cart path only (with smart carts) on a perfectly dry course. Totally unnecessary! They are not doing thgemselves any favors by keeping the grass pristine if they are running off customers.

Excellent course that tests your skill. Stop and enjoy the view at every hole. Incredible!

Jack Nickolas designed public course. Demanding and rewarding high altitude golf. Need I say more?

We came for a sleigh ride during the winter. The wranglers were very friendly and informative while on the ride, they provided blankets amd coco to keep us warm too. The dinner that followed was also great.

Where to stay in Breckenridge

Many cabins and lodges take inspiration from the mountains in their design at Breckenridge. If you're there to ski, find a hotel or inn near the slopes that offers ski in/ski out options, or choose lodging along the free shuttle route so you don't have to worry about parking. If you're traveling with a family and are planning to stay a week or so, consider booking a condo or private home with plenty of space to spread out. You'll find small and exclusive bed and breakfasts in the center of town, while sprawling resorts are located away from the main street on the forested mountainside.
