Thimble Islands, Branford
(4.6/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
The Thimble Islands is an archipelago consisting of small islands in Long Island Sound, located in and around the harbor of Stony Creek in the southeast corner of Branford, Connecticut. The archipelago of islands made up of Stony Creek pink granite bedrock were once the tops of hills prior to the last ice age. As a result, the Thimble Islands are much more stable than most other islands in Long Island Sound, which are terminal moraines of rubble deposited by retreating glaciers.HistoryKnown to the Mattabeseck Indians as Kuttomquosh, "the beautiful sea rocks," they consist of a jumble of granite rocks, ledges and outcroppings resulting from glaciation, numbering between 100 and 365 depending on where the line is drawn between an island and a mere rock. The islands serve as a rest stop for migrating seals. The first European to discover the islands was Adrian Block in 1614. Legend says that Captain Kidd buried his treasure here, causing intermittent interest among treasure hunters who believe they have unearthed a clue to its location, although more interest is generally paid to Gardiners Island, 30 miles (48 km) away.

  • Have taken this tour 4 times with various friends and family members. Well worth the time and expense. You get a good overview of the islands and learn some history.
  • We took a boat tour of these islands and it was just a wonderful way to spend an hour on a sunny Sunday morning. It is also a home tour in the sense that you get to see some really nice houses from ve...  more »

  • We had a great day. The tour was excellent! Loved it. I recommend this to everyone one. The only negative is that there aren't any restaurants close by except for one small one. We paid $23.00 each for lobster rolls. The lady taking orders did not mention that it didn't include French fries or coleslaw. If you order this make sure you order the platter.
  • Always a fun time and they provide great information about the area. They provide drinks on the boat and it's also family friendly. Beautiful scenery. Sometimes you can see dolphins off Faulkner's island!
  • The tour is very nice and unique to the area. Highly recommend if you can make it. The payment is in cash and on board.
  • Nice and quick boat ride around Thimble islands. Last tours go out 4.15pm better be there 3pm just in case last one gets cancelled (happened to me)
  • Boat loads of fun, Captain has a great sense of humor. We laughed through the whole trip.
