Trip Planner:   USA  /  Massachusetts  /  Boston  /  Waterfront
Favored by both locals and visitors, Boston's Waterfront neighborhood is dotted with shops, street vendors, restaurants, cafes, and bars. Stroll along Boston Harborwalk's piers to enjoy the sea breeze and watch ships heading in and out of the harbor. Take a boat tour around the harbor (whale-watching tours are available, too), admire the views, and learn about Boston's maritime history. The airport is on across the harbor, making this a perfect place for plane spotting. Windy days on the waterfront can be chilly, so bring a sweater. Put Waterfront on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Boston route maker .

  • The Boston side is occupied by several buildings, but this won't stop you from taking a pleasant walk on the edge of the water. The ideal, probably a walk on a sunny day. Although the temperature during my visit was cooler in the summer, I think that it made the experience even more enjoyable. You can go to the marina and watch the boats sail, or if you continue to walk along the water, you may find you in front of the Boston aquarium. Turn and face the city: you will have a superb overview of downtown Boston with its modern skyscrapers, as well as some of its historic buildings that survive very well to the encroachment of modernity. There is also, very near the aquarium the restaurant Chart House, and serving grilled and seafood very well side. The event is free and relaxing: have an overview of Boston and enjoy the sea air and wind from the coast.

  • We spent quite a bit of time here, coming one day to take a whale watching trip and another to eat at one of the many fish places. There are green spaces nearby for relaxing and people watching.  more »

Where to stay in Boston

To stay close to where most of Boston's tourist action is, book a room at one of the many hotels located downtown, near the center of the city and state governments, businesses, and shopping. For a more affordable option, consider a budget-friendly boutique hotel or small bed and breakfast in one of the city's diverse residential neighborhoods. If you plan to stay longer and need a real home away from home, explore Boston's short-term rental options, which include private villas, waterfront lofts, and luxury apartments scattered across the city's historical districts.
