Mast General Store, Boone

#5 of 19 in Things to do in Boone
The Mast General Store, located in Historic Valle Crucis, is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places as one of the best remaining examples of an old country general store. It is still the center of the community housing the post office (Valle Crucis, NC 28691) and offering coffee for 5ยข on the honor system. There is even a large wood stove you can sit around on cold days swapping stories or playing a game of checkers. It remains true to the old-time general store from the 19th century by offering items that its neighbors might need, as well as products of interest to travelers and other visitors. Today there are nine locations, including the Original Store and Annex, both located in Valle Crucis, North Carolina. The store sells commodities, such as old-time hearth and home goods, outdoor clothing and gear, footwear, work clothes, old-fashioned wind-up toys, regional books and music, honey, and more than 500 varieties of old-fashioned candy.HistoryThe building that would become Mast General Store was constructed in 1882 by Henry Taylor and opened in 1883. W.W. Mast purchased half interest in the store in 1897, and the store was renamed the "Taylor and Mast General Store". In 1913, Mast purchased the remaining half of Taylor's interest, and the business became known as the Mast General Store. The business stayed in the family through three generations until, in 1973, it was sold to a doctor from Atlanta and a professor from Appalachian State University. The business closed its doors in 1977. It would remain closed until John and Faye Cooper purchased and reopened it in June 1980. In 1996, Mast General Store became an employee-owned company.

  • This place seemed to be lacking, despite all the items. Half the store is clothes. Then most of the rest are toys. Many are modern toys. They then have candy by the pound but most of them were ones you can buy anywhere. I was hoping for some homemade goods, maybe some old fashioned drinks in bottles. Maybe some more adult or practical items. So. Great for kids. Not so much for adults.
  • A nice walk back in time. The newer store has a ton of candy, sundries, some clothes and the original store is full of nostaligia like "old time" toys and gifts, clothing, kitchen items, etc. Seems like they have almost everything there. Staff is very very kind and courteous and...bonus...they have a genuine old style Coca-Cola soda cooler. Even better, the post office inside is real, as are the post office boxes in one of my attached photos. Just a fun experience in a delightful community!
  • Oh my oh my the candy runs over. They literally (that did not mean figuratively) have barrels of candy. As a fast kid I can say this was awesome. Grab a bag and start filling it up. You can put all kinds of stuff in one of these bags. We always buy too much candy. I guess I should mention that they sell clothes camping gear and much much more but they have candy. Oh and shoes. But candy. Yes.
  • This place has never been one of my favorite stores. It's a tourist trap and it's way over priced. If that is what you are looking for its not terrible, but it's not a store that you actually go to shop in.
  • Christian was so helpful and patient with trying on shoes. Really good selection of clothes. Love the old fashioned games and toys. And left with 2 pounds of old fashioned candy!
