Equestrian Trail
The former estate of a wealthy entrepreneur and philanthropist, Moses H. Cone Memorial Park combines lavish living with natural beauty. At the heart of the 1,416 hectare (3,500 acre) estate sits Flat Top Manor, a massive Colonial Revival-style mansion built in 1901. The manor now houses the Parkway Craft Center, which displays handmade crafts by local artists. Due to Moses Cone's interest in conservation, the estate contains large forests of white pine and hemlock hedges, as well as man-made lakes filled with bass and trout. You can explore the grounds on carriage trails which guide you through the estate; they also wind past the family cemetery and near the carriage and apple barn. • This historic manor is a must visit. Flat Top Manor is right on the Parkway at mile marker 294. Visiting the gift shop inside the manor will give you a peek at the home. No tours are offered. The manor is placed at the top of a most scenic bowl looking down toward Blowing Rock. All that you see looking out used to be an apple orchard. There are carriage roads to hike in multiple directions. Yes you may meet local horse back riders out on the trails as well. There are 2 additional trail heads to visit, Bass Lake and Trout Lake. Following the carriage roads down the ridge will give you a chance to experience the interior of the Appalachians.
  • Unsuspected beauty (both structure and grounds) that we didn't plan enough time to explore. We walked the 5 mile round trip to the observation tower through woods and large open fields (that yielded long range views) on an amazingly well manicured trail. The grandeur, detail and scale of the estate's home marveled us.
  • We walked to the fire watch tower, and the view was fantastic. The walk up was steep and long, but it was well worth it at the end. Everyone should walk this at some point.
  • Beautiful views and well kept hiking and horse trails. Perfect for hiking with kids and babies. The craft center is always nice to visit!
  • Needs repair. One note, this isn't the low budget type craft store. Nice artisan items for sale. Super nice staff. Website says tours were available but once there, it was really June. Disappointing in that respect.
