Now in the National Register of Historic Places, the Indiana Theater – or simply “the Indiana,” as it is known to Bloomington residents – was built in 1922 as a silent movie house by Harry and Nova Vonderschmitt. Beautifully restored and outfitted with state-of-the-art technical equipment, the Theater is operated by BCT Management, Inc. on behalf of the City of Bloomington.

The Theater has become the primary venue for the Lotus World Music Festival, Indiana University’s African American Arts Institute, and Jazz from Bloomington. National acts such as Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Joan Baez, Andrew Bird, Kimya Dawson, the Indigo Girls, Umphrey's McGee, Gillian Welch and John Mellencamp have graced the stage. Over 200 performances take place at the Theater each year, organized by more than 50 community organizations.

  • The BCT hosts a variety of live entertainment ranging from musical to dramatic as well as some movies.
  • Perfect performance space in lovely downtown Bloomington. I've seen movies and concerts here as well as award shows. I'm proud of this space as an anchor to our downtown setting.

  • Undoubtedly the best performing arts venue in Bloomington with a top-notch schedule year round. Not a bad seat in this house. What I like best about it is the vibe in this former 1920's movie theatre. It's present no matter whether you see a play, a band, or the Bloomington Symphony.
  • Great atmosphere. Wonderful seating and standing options with local beer on tap. Albeit a bit expensive.
  • Best concert venue I have ever been in. I've seen several concerts there (including during the Lotus Festival).
  • Every seat is a good seat in this small theater.
  • Love to see shows here, there is always something going on for all members of the family!
