Architectural Building Historic Site
Now in the National Register of Historic Places, the Indiana Theater – or simply “the Indiana,” as it is known to Bloomington residents – was built in 1922 as a silent movie house by Harry and Nova Vonderschmitt. Beautifully restored and outfitted with state-of-the-art technical equipment, the Theater is operated by BCT Management, Inc. on behalf of the City of Bloomington.

The Theater has become the primary venue for the Lotus World Music Festival, Indiana University’s African American Arts Institute, and Jazz from Bloomington. National acts such as Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Joan Baez, Andrew Bird, Kimya Dawson, the Indigo Girls, Umphrey's McGee, Gillian Welch and John Mellencamp have graced the stage. Over 200 performances take place at the Theater each year, organized by more than 50 community organizations.

  • Very cool classic theater with great acoustics and comfortable seating. I saw Ben Folds perform here in February 2017, and this was the perfect venue for an intimate performance. The speciality drinks were great, too! Thanks, Cardinal Spirits!
  • Local theatre with a wide range of venues. Each year I attend the Banff Mountain Film Festival and the Limestone comedy festival. Many other unique shows and programs throughout the year
  • I was annoyed by the ushers who came and sat on a bench directly in front of us in the balcony. They effectively blocked the view for myself and one other, because we were on the first row of the second tier of seats in the balcony against the left wall facing the stage, and they were low. We PAID for these seats, and to have those two ushers sit directly in the way of our view of the stage was maddening. It was originally a movie theater, so the main focus for the way the seats are arranged is above the stage level where the middle of the screen would be. However, you have to look down to the stage level to see the actors. All I saw was the backs of the heads of the 2 women ushers sitting on this bench. They seemed to enjoy the performance that we, the paying customers did not get to see. Will not be going back because of this. Too much to pay for tickets only to have these ushers sneak in and block your view.
  • It's a cozy little theater with great plays. The only downside is that the bathrooms get too full during intermission.
  • Fantastic performance variety in a small town. You would NEVER know you are in a "small" town. Love the variety!!
