Now in the National Register of Historic Places, the Indiana Theater – or simply “the Indiana,” as it is known to Bloomington residents – was built in 1922 as a silent movie house by Harry and Nova Vonderschmitt. Beautifully restored and outfitted with state-of-the-art technical equipment, the Theater is operated by BCT Management, Inc. on behalf of the City of Bloomington.

The Theater has become the primary venue for the Lotus World Music Festival, Indiana University’s African American Arts Institute, and Jazz from Bloomington. National acts such as Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Joan Baez, Andrew Bird, Kimya Dawson, the Indigo Girls, Umphrey's McGee, Gillian Welch and John Mellencamp have graced the stage. Over 200 performances take place at the Theater each year, organized by more than 50 community organizations.

  • Great little theater! Lots of history and nice decor. Slightly dated but that's kind of what gives it character. Larger than it seems at first.
  • Just saw Cardinal Theatre's "Frankenstein" there. They also do a great job of featuring old movie classics, which I would love to see happen more often. Great venue!
  • Fun theatre with good balcony seating. Lots of excellent local events here.
  • Great venue for concerts! Not a bad seat. I have always set in balcony...lower & upper...and not disappointed. Also, are venue for other events.
  • Beautiful old theater. Very efficient system for getting folks in, served, and sat. Will definitely be visiting this venue again.
