How It All Began....

More than 60 years ago, Hoyt and Ruby Alexander had a dream to leave behind a legacy for generations to come. Hence forth in 1953, Hoyt and Ruby purchased a small trading post in the Trackrock area of Blairsville, Georgia. Hoyt began selling feed and seed, a few groceries, and gas to those in the community and anyone else who may be passing thru. If a customer came into the store looking for something Hoyt didn't have, he was more than glad to make a special trip wherever he needed to go to get whatever the customer needed.

A few short years later, Hoyt and Ruby saw a need to carry clothing and shoes. So, they sat aside a very small section of the store and began carrying a few clothing necessities.

Fast forward to 1977....

After seeking other employment opportunities and not finding anything that felt right, Eddy, Hoyt and Ruby's youngest child, decided to come back to Blairsville to help his Mom and Dad in the store. Eddy had dreams and boy were they big dreams. Eddy decided to start selling hardware supplies and appliances. And as a 24 year old young man he also had a desire to carry guns and ammunition. Hoyt shortly learned that his dream of leaving behind a legacy was going to happen.

In 1978 while working in the store, Eddy met Sandy. The couple soon married and it was only fitting for Sandy to come to work in the family business. Hoyt and Ruby just thought Eddy had big dreams. Sandy had even bigger ones! While Eddy was busy getting the hardware, appliances, and sporting good departments established, Sandy was in the process of growing the clothing and shoe departments. Needless to say with two young whipper snappers that thought the sky was the limit, the store began to expand. A room here and room there, knock this wall out, add a wall here the store quickly went from a very small trading post to a large department store in the middle of no where.

In the mid 90's, Eddy and Sandy decided that furniture would be something good to add to the mix of things. Hence the store would need to be added onto again. At this time Alexander's carried gas, groceries, appliances, mens and ladies clothing and shoes, guns and ammunition, and now furniture. All of this while being a True Value Hardware Store.

Sadly, Ruby passed away in 1995 and Hoyt passed away in 2001. Their values and traditions live on in the store daily... treat everyone with respect and every customer should get service with a smile.

Today the store has an incredible 50,000 square feet of retail space which is hard to imagine just standing out front. Because of the uniqueness of the store, many regard the landmark as a tourist site. What began in 1953 as a small general store has now evolved into a shopping experience with causual yet trendy clothing and shoes, furniture, appliances, guns, ammunition, and archery supplies. As a family owned business, Alexander's has a set of shared traditions and values that are deeply rooted in the history of the store. Eddy and Sandy have carried on the traditions of both Hoyt and Ruby as the second generation and are passing that onto their son Mark and his wife Kennetha, the third generation.

So you see, Alexander's is more than just a store. It's a testimony of how a family business can be passed onto another generation and be successful in today's era of mega stores and mall mania. The next time you travel to the North Georgia Mountains, stop in and wander around the store. We'd love to meet you.

  • Interesting store with a wide selection of quality products. However, in many cases they do not allow refunds or returns, nor do they honor sale prices on items purchased at regular price just a few days prior. Occasionally they'll entice you into the store by advertising a great sale price on an item, when they really only have one in stock. By the time you get there, it's long gone. Also, they recently advertised an "All Guns At Cost Sale," which had me standing in line for way too long only to discover that the gun I wanted was clearly not priced at cost. If you decide to shop here, keep your wits about you.
  • Alexander's is chock full of merchandise, but it wasn't exactly what we expected for "everything under the sun." The main wares are clothing, shoes (lots of it!), men's hunting clothes, furniture, guns and ammo. I was hoping to find home goods like cookware, lots of bedding, etc. camping or hiking gear, and there weren't many clothes for the 26-35 year old female. The ladies clothes are really geared towards the over 40 crowd, which is their target customer, so no knocks there! I also didn't see a lot of things for kids like clothes or toys. BUT, what I did see was competitive pricing for every price range. All the clothes were a good quality and the name brands like Simply Southern, Under Armour, Sketchers or Keen were all competitively priced. I didn't get the feeling that Alexander's gauged prices at all. The guns and ammo were also reasonably priced compared to big chains. One other thing I want to point out: after reading reviews about how unfriendly the staff were, I simply didn't find that to be the case. Every employee I encountered smiled, said hi, asked if I needed help and was generally very friendly. They also didn't seem to be stalking the customers (either trying to push sales or watch their every move as if to prevent thefts). Overall, I'd shop here again when I'm in Blairsville. Now I know what to expect!
  • A unique and eclectic montage of items for sale. Clothing, shoes, furniture, appliances, and guns. Appalachian and Cherokee souvenirs as well. You’ll walk in never expecting to see so much. Prices are fair and the staff we encountered were friendly. The only gig rating it 4 not 5 is for the restroom. A key to a locked shed outside is unacceptable even under hillbilly circumstances.
  • If you haven't been here find a reason to go. They have a great selection of everything under the sun. Clothing, footwear, furniture, appliances, sporting goods and guns and ammo. All at very reasonable prices.
  • Love this store!! They have everything! Everyone is very friendly, always willing to help. The sales are worth the hour drive for me. I can find name brands, furniture, shoes, and sporting goods. It’s a one stop shop!
