How It All Began....

More than 60 years ago, Hoyt and Ruby Alexander had a dream to leave behind a legacy for generations to come. Hence forth in 1953, Hoyt and Ruby purchased a small trading post in the Trackrock area of Blairsville, Georgia. Hoyt began selling feed and seed, a few groceries, and gas to those in the community and anyone else who may be passing thru. If a customer came into the store looking for something Hoyt didn't have, he was more than glad to make a special trip wherever he needed to go to get whatever the customer needed.

A few short years later, Hoyt and Ruby saw a need to carry clothing and shoes. So, they sat aside a very small section of the store and began carrying a few clothing necessities.

Fast forward to 1977....

After seeking other employment opportunities and not finding anything that felt right, Eddy, Hoyt and Ruby's youngest child, decided to come back to Blairsville to help his Mom and Dad in the store. Eddy had dreams and boy were they big dreams. Eddy decided to start selling hardware supplies and appliances. And as a 24 year old young man he also had a desire to carry guns and ammunition. Hoyt shortly learned that his dream of leaving behind a legacy was going to happen.

In 1978 while working in the store, Eddy met Sandy. The couple soon married and it was only fitting for Sandy to come to work in the family business. Hoyt and Ruby just thought Eddy had big dreams. Sandy had even bigger ones! While Eddy was busy getting the hardware, appliances, and sporting good departments established, Sandy was in the process of growing the clothing and shoe departments. Needless to say with two young whipper snappers that thought the sky was the limit, the store began to expand. A room here and room there, knock this wall out, add a wall here the store quickly went from a very small trading post to a large department store in the middle of no where.

In the mid 90's, Eddy and Sandy decided that furniture would be something good to add to the mix of things. Hence the store would need to be added onto again. At this time Alexander's carried gas, groceries, appliances, mens and ladies clothing and shoes, guns and ammunition, and now furniture. All of this while being a True Value Hardware Store.

Sadly, Ruby passed away in 1995 and Hoyt passed away in 2001. Their values and traditions live on in the store daily... treat everyone with respect and every customer should get service with a smile.

Today the store has an incredible 50,000 square feet of retail space which is hard to imagine just standing out front. Because of the uniqueness of the store, many regard the landmark as a tourist site. What began in 1953 as a small general store has now evolved into a shopping experience with causual yet trendy clothing and shoes, furniture, appliances, guns, ammunition, and archery supplies. As a family owned business, Alexander's has a set of shared traditions and values that are deeply rooted in the history of the store. Eddy and Sandy have carried on the traditions of both Hoyt and Ruby as the second generation and are passing that onto their son Mark and his wife Kennetha, the third generation.

So you see, Alexander's is more than just a store. It's a testimony of how a family business can be passed onto another generation and be successful in today's era of mega stores and mall mania. The next time you travel to the North Georgia Mountains, stop in and wander around the store. We'd love to meet you.

  • Went in to buy my first Lever Action Rifle, my second firearm in general. Was looking around with no help. Understandable since I'm 19, almost 20, and I look young. I asked to see one of the Henry rifles, and an older man with longer gray hair replied "No, you look too young." I offered to show my drivers license to which he replied again, "I don't care, I'm busy." Left frustrated and uncared for. Decided to go to the USI Bargain Barn in Jasper. Got a fantastic price on the same rifle, same caliber, brand new and straight from the box. The gentleman and lady at the desks were extremely friendly, and quite funny too. Me and my whole family liked Alexander's. Not anymore.
  • One of those tucked into the valley places you often find up here (another is the Hogshead outdoors store in Warne) that will surprise you. Wide range of clothing, shoes, furniture, appliances, sporting goods. Regular prices reasonable but not killer deals (thought the furniture was especially reasonable for fairly good quality). But drop by several times a year. With seasonal clearances, etc., some good brand-name stuff has 50% or more off. Shoes can be an especially good deal with Naturalizer, Bob's, Clark's, etc., as low as $19.99 and some $9.99. Got a $70 pair of Sketchers for $35. But they could use more than one men's dressing room. 😊
  • Great store ! Nice selection of men's and ladies clothes and shoes my husband enjoyed shopping in the Sporting Goods section well I was looking at furniture I would definitely recommend that you go to the store the sales associates were very nice and polite. I will be going back !
  • A General Store on steroids!  The store opened in 1953 as a small general store but has grown to a store that sales everything under the sun.   Alexander’s is family owned and the do business the old fashion way - based on  deeply rooted values and long held traditions.  You can expect friendly, professional, personal service and a genuine warm welcome. Their inventory consists of  clothing, footwear, furniture, appliances, gifts, sporting goods, including but not limited to guns, bows, ammunition, and accessories.  It is a very unique shopping experience. I bought my wife her concealed weapon (outstanding price) here and the service was top notch and professional.  The salesman was very knowledgeable and very helpful.  My wife bought a few other things and I bought a few hunting items  everyone that waited on us were very friendly and helpful.  We are going back in the fall to do all our Christmas shopping at Alexander’s. If you are ever in the north Georgia mountains (Blairsville, GA) make sure you stop by Alexander’s, you'll be glad you did.  Prices are very good and their sales are even better.
  • I recommend Jeb Stewart for all your furniture purchases. He's honest and will answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.
