Where to stay in Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

If you don't stay in one of the two campgrounds in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, the nearby town of Montrose serves as the second-most convenient option. Here you'll find numerous economy motels and a few small bed and breakfasts and inns. Many of these are only about 16 km (10 mi) from the park's south entrance. Delta sits north of Montrose and offers a similar range of accommodation types. Here, you'll be about 40 km (25 mi) from the park. About 56 km (35 mi) south of the park, the small town of Ouray offers a couple of hotels, some of which sit in restored brick Victorian buildings that characterize the town's architecture.

  • After seeing the incredible views from the rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, we came back the next morning to take East Portal Road down to the river level. We had a nice picnic there and even ...  more »
  • It is about 5 1/2 miles down with 16% grade at some places but to get down to the level of this beautiful river where some of the water is diverted into the tunnel is worth it.  more »
  • While it is possible to hike to the river using extremely challenging, unmaintained trails, the East Portal Road is the only realistic route to the river for the vast majority of visitors to the park....  more »

  • Had a great experience here with my son. Was very quiet when we were here. I would highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys camping/fishing.
  • Campgrounds like this one make me wish I had a Class B or small Class C. This must be the best campground in the Black Canyon National Park.
