North Dakota State Capitol Building, Bismarck

#3 of 13 in Things to do in Bismarck
The North Dakota State Capitol is the house of government of the U.S. state of North Dakota. The Capitol, a 21 story tower, is in Bismarck at 600 East Boulevard Avenue, on a 160acre campus that is the site of many other government buildings. The capitol building and the surrounding office buildings house the state's legislative and judicial branches, as well as many government agencies. The State Capitol is largely surrounded by state government buildings. The parks, walking trails, and monuments on the grounds give visitors information about the state's history, making it one of the city's tourist attractions. Six buildings exist on the grounds; all built during various time periods as the government grew. Not all state agencies are housed on the grounds, however: a large number are spread throughout the city in various facilities. Plans for a massive expansion and improvement of the grounds were developed in 2000, but very little of the plan has been implemented as of 2012.

  • The capital has many interesting photos posted on past history, neat architecture for its era and outside landscaping is certainly something to admire.  more »

  • We were attending the Capital A'Fair and saw these young children riding in the"barrel" train. What Fun for them 😊
  • Beautiful grounds. The buildings are pleasent and the gardens make you feel peaceful.
  • I love going to the capitol grounds. Its so beautiful and the buildings have so much history. As a photographer you can always find something beautiful to capture!
  • The state House was good with cool architecture and had an amazing observation floor.
  • This proud monolith stands tall over Bismarck, a peerless monument devoid of weakness and built upon the notion that strength is achieved through endless toil and unwavering devotion to the state. Woe to he that would challenge this towering symbol of immovable strength and absolute justice. Fool is he who believes he can escape its sight: it is always watching. It is always there, reminding us of our sacred duty to serve.
