A Watery Wonderland

Biscayne National Park's peaceful emerald islands surrounded by turquoise water and teeming coral reefs seem a world away from the bustle of Miami, but the park remains within eyeshot just offshore from the United States' leading tropical metropolis. The park offers some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the U.S., but reefs aren't the only draw here. Biscayne's 70,000 hectares (172,971 acres) also include shoreline mangrove swamps, the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay, and coral limestone keys. The diverse ecosystems hold an even more varied array of plant and animal life, including seagrass beds, sponges, crustaceans, corals, colorful reef fish, pelagic fish, manatees, and sea turtles. Water makes up 95 percent of the park's area, so boating is the best way to observe wildlife. Where to stay

There are two campgrounds inside Biscayne National Park, both of which are accessible only by boat. The park does not offer any other type of accommodation. For a roof over your head, you'll have to stay on the mainland in either Homestead or Florida City. Both destinations offer numerous hotels and motels, and both are just a few minutes' drive from Convoy Point, around which the mainland portion of the park sits. If you choose to visit the park on a private boat tour, staying in or around Miami is the most convenient option.
