Dog Mountain Trail, Bingen

Dog Mountain rises above the north side of the Columbia River Gorge in the U.S. state of Washington. The base of the mountain is in Skamania County along Washington State Route 14, about 9mi east of Stevenson and 53mi east of Vancouver. From its base at, it climbs steeply to an elevation of 2948ft.The mountain is the site of a popular hiking trail that begins on the north side of Route 14 at milepost 53. The 6mi trail winds through heavy forest to meadows and the site of a former fire lookout. After climbing steeply for about the first half mile (0.8 km), the trail splits into two forks that meet again at the summit. The lookout was built in 1931 and reconstructed in 1952 to watch for fires across the river in Oregon's Mount Hood National Forest. Outmoded by surveillance from roads and airplanes, the fire lookout was dismantled in 1967.Attractions include views of the Columbia Gorge, Mount Hood, and wildflowers, especially in May. Flowering plants along the trail include chocolate lily, woodland star, fairy slipper, long-spurred violet, and yellow fawn lily. Hazards include poison oak, rattlesnakes, and steep slopes. The trail's difficulty caused one writer to describe it as "a grueling hike", while another said that Dog Mountain might better be called "Dogged Mountain or possibly Doggone Mountain", and recommended good boots for descending its steep pitches. A fatality occurred on the mountain in 2003, when a hiker lost her footing and fell 500ft.

  • Well this is straight up and straight down. Steep but great views when it's clear. Be prepared with poles and good shoes! Take water too because it has areas that are very exposed. Take layers too bec...  more »

  • The Gorge is getting loved to death, and this a good example of that. If you're not parked by 8:30, good luck. The view from the top, though, is amazing! Bun buster. You've been warned!  more »

  • One of the toughest, but most rewarding, hikes in the Columbia River Gorge. Sweeping vistas abound near and at the summit of this classic Gorge hike. A must-do for a native or visitor!
  • Very beautiful.. very thrilling and challenging hiking place. I loved it...
  • Dog Mountain is one part hype and two parts adventure. The first because honestly it's not always that impressive... a good workout for sure but just a steep dirt hike in late fall with many better options around. However, in Spring the place is absolutely incredible as the WIldflowers come into full bloom. Winter can also be incredible though the mountain gets enough snow to be a different sort of challenge but it certainly adds to the view. If you're visiting in peak times (i.e. May), get there super early for any shot at a parking lot and do not park on the side of the road, you will get a nasty fine or towed.
  • Beautiful hike and incredible views of the Columbia River Gorge.
