Ship Island, Biloxi

4.6
#3 of 13 in Nature in Mississippi
The collective name for two barrier islands off the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Ship Island is home to an expanse of beach and a historic fort. East Ship Island is only accessible by personal watercraft, whereas an excursion boat travels regularly to West Ship Island, home of Fort Massachusetts. Collect shells, swim, or explore the 19th-century fort. Make sure to watch for dolphins on the horizon; they are often spotted here. If you go swimming or paddling, you should be careful of jellyfish and stingrays. Shade is limited here, so come prepared (you can bring umbrellas, lightweight folding chairs, and small coolers) or plan to rent an umbrella and beach chairs on the island. There is food service available on site. Put Ship Island into our Biloxi trip itinerary planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Clean beaches. Great ferry service. Soft, titanium-enriched sand. Lots of wildlife and marine life before you even get off the dock. Great for school science field trips. Friendly park volunteers. Definitely climb to the top levels of Fort Massachusetts. Convenient boardwalks for crossing the island. Pavilions for getting out of the sun and a decently stocked shop for lunch, snacks, or whatever you forgot to bring.
  • I love visiting this place. Ferry ride is relaxing, and I usually see dolphins on the way over. This is the only place on the Mississippi Gulf Coast that I've found nice sea shells.
  • WHERE SUNSCREEN!! Buy the strongest you can find and apply every 2 hours. No joke! They warn you multiple times about this and we both reapplied a couple times but turned lobster red anyway. But the sun is what we signed up for and the beach itself didn't disappoint! I've never felt finer sand and the water was a nice 85 in mid-July. The food is not too bad and they sell beer too. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
