Pfeiffer State Beach, Big Sur

Categories: Beaches, Nature & Parks, Outdoor Activities
Inspirock Rating:
4.6/5 based on 1,000+ reviews on the web
The unspoiled Pfeiffer State Beach is a hit with locals but lesser known among tourists. Take a narrow road off the highway to reach this rugged oasis. Make sure to drive slowly, watching out for cars coming from the other direction. The beach's tranquil atmosphere and small crowds come at the cost of limited parking. You may have to wait for a spot. Once there, take a stroll, admire the dramatic views of offshore rocks and sea stacks, watch the waves crashing, and look for deposits of the area's unusual purple sand. You might even see a whale in the distance. Bring a sweater; it can get windy here. A visit to Pfeiffer State Beach represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Big Sur vacation trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • Access to this beach is along a dirt trail along a little Creek. Getting there is part of the fun. The sand dunes are super fun to climb. The double sided beach is unique, and the purple sand is super cool. Get there early as parking is quite limited.
  • Did not enjoy it. Very tiny, overcrowded and over rated. Saw online it was one of the top beaches in California, but I think that was only listed to drive more revenue, because there's a ten dollar fee. Only stayed there for 5 minutes, again because there wasn't much to see and super windy (the landscape acts like a funnel). So a waste of ten dollars. Don't pay for beaches.
  • One of the most beautiful beaches in American. Very hard to find. Swing by Big Sur Station if you need directions. Purple sand is interesting, but the beach is gorgeous.
  • Simply beautiful location. Easy access for just about everyone who can walk. The beach is open and long and the rock formations along the beach are amazing. This was one of our favorite stops on our trip, we only wishd we'd had more time to stay here.
  • Pfeirrer State Beach is a really nice spot to go to when you are in the main Big Sur area. It's a long walk from Hwy 1 but you can walk down if you want to pay the $10.00 parking that they have available. Great place for the sunset, chill or just hand out.
