  • I hiked with my husband and four friends. We saw coyotes, tarantulas, and many birds. The trail was fairly well marked, but not well used. Forget cell phone service.  more »
  • We arrived at this trailhead late in the day, later than we expected -- just a little more than two hours before sundown. We didn't want to be out after dark, so we decided to hike one hour up the tra...  more »
  • If you can only do one trail during your visit, the Lost Mine trail is the one to do. It is a round-trip 4.8 mile (in and out) hike that takes you to parts of the Chisos Mountains that you don't see f...  more »

  • One of my favorite hikes in the park. Love the diversity of the hike. Challenging enough but not too difficult for most ages. Amazing views of the old mountain ranges and Mexico. Best place to receive a signal or make a call on your cell phone - about a half mile up the trail with a view to the valley.
  • Great hike with beautiful views and saw bears in the wild for the first time! A little steep in parts but worth it. Only 4.8 miles round trip.
  • An awesome hike with an awesome view. It is a Strenuous hike, but well worth it.
  • Lost mine trail gives you a great overlook, if you are not of the faint of heart you can go right instead of left at the ridge and make your way to the top of Casa Grande for a view overlooking the visitor's center. It is a strenuous, but rewarding hike!
  • Gorgeous!!! What an incredible place. Absolutely worth the effort to get there.

Where to stay in Big Bend National Park

To spend the night in Big Bend National Park, pitch your tent in one of three developed campgrounds or bunk down in one of the rooms or cottages at the Chisos Mountains Lodge. Of the three campgrounds, Chisos Basin, known for colorful mountain sunsets, is easiest to reach. Rio Grande Village and Cottonwood, however, provide scenic settings of their own along the Rio Grande River. A few motels lie just outside the park, but options are limited. If you need a broader range of choices, consider staying in Marfa, a two-hour drive north of the heart of the park.
