Assateague State Park, Berlin

4.7
#1 of 16 in Things to do in Berlin
Maryland's only oceanfront park, Assateague State Park hosts water and land activities. Many come to watch the wild horses along the shallow waters of the marsh, and try to spot various bird species and red foxes. Hike or bicycle on trails along the edge of the marshland for wildlife viewing. Trails also lead past Rackliffe House, an 18th-century plantation that has been restored to its former glory. Beaches, camping, and fishing will keep you busy near the shore. To visit Assateague State Park and other attractions in Berlin, use our Berlin tour itinerary planner .

  • My experience was very positive and I came away feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The campsites are all within walking distance of the beach, which seemed uncrowded compared to the national seashore visible to the south and they say the piranhas aren’t as much of a problem at this beach either. There are wild ponies meandering all around the place too, it’s incredible. The bathrooms are nice and were clean every day. They have running water, flush toilets, showers, foot wash stations, and an outdoor sink. Recommend reserving sites well in advance to your visit, it fills up quick. The flies are impervious to most bug repellent, so I also recommend having some kind of screened in area for your campsite.
  • I just love this park and the campground on the premises. There many wild horses can be on road, parking lot, campground, beach. Beach is not very crowded. There are picnic tables and barbecue grills if someone wants to cook. Great place for a great price! Highly recommended!
  • We stayed in the state park with a tent in lot c. The camping experience was decent enough; you're going to want to try to reserve the higher number spaces because right around 11 or 12 is next to the dunes/beach, otherwise you're at the road. Right about now the wind is insane, but in a way where it keeps you cool from the sun and keeps the bugs away giving you an awesome experience. The beach was great, around sections A and B there are lifeguards if you have kids, otherwise there are no guards on duty. Finally, our experience with the bathrooms were decent. The men's room was pretty good and the only complaint was one of the shower floors was cracked thus leaving an unstable floor. The women's bathroom was better or at least that is what I was told. Overall pretty great for a couple day stay in the tent, and an awesome place if you have an RV or some sort of camper setup.
  • Amazing family fun. As a first time camper in a campground I was pleasantly surprised. We had a great spot against the dunes so felt almost alone at times. Breeze kept bugs away. Bathrooms were clean and modern. Family atmosphere. Horses do their own thing. We were quiet observers so had no problems. Will go again!
  • Absolutely gorgeous place to visit! We decided to go here for the beach instead of ocean City and was not disappointed! It was fast less crowded, the kids could play without running into people, we got to see the ponies and relax the whole time! It doesn't have the board walk but we don't need it so it's perfect for us! Bathrooms were clean and they had showers there if you are taking a day trip and don't want to day sand into the car. Never made it to the actual park but it's planned for next year!
