  • We hiked it on 7/5/17. It was +90 degrees at the trailhead and there was still snow on the trail a couple miles into the hike. It is a pretty hike that hugs Fall Creek. There is a nice log footbridge ...  more »

  • stunning place! If you love challenging hikes, climb this mountain. Weekends are sort of crowded, but that doesn't ruin the experience. There is enough space for everyone.
  • I would give it 5 stars but too many people on the trail, dangerous and destroyed. Hope NFS limits trail goers. Beautiful mountain otherwise
  • We went in early August, the weather was perfect, wasn't too crowded and it was a safe climb
  • A beautiful place with stunning views all the way up. If you start out from the Devils Lake Trailhead, the elevation gain/ distance traversed to the summit is 5000 feet over 5 miles. The first 1500 feet of elevation gain essentially puts you on the base of South Sister's slopes. It is when you reach the mountain prominence itself that the climb begins to get a bit more difficult. At some point in this part of the climb, you'll lose sight of the mountain top, and you will not see it again until you reach 8500 feet in elevation. Reaching this point is a milestone; you can see the mountain top again, along with a glacier that melts in a pool of water below where you'll be standing. You will see the Ridgeline and trail that lead to the top.... Which is about 1500 feet higher than you. The terrain is different. It's a steep climb...over volcanic scree...the climb becomes more of a scramble. Two steps forward, you slide 1 foot back. Many people use the ridge line to rest before pushing on. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING THAT. In the medical field, high altitude climbing begins at 8000 feet. The human body is not accustomed to working hard at that elevation (unless you are acclimatized). The air is thinner at that level; your body is going to burn crazy calories in an effort to climb the mountain. You will get tired. So take the time to eat, drink water and rest. Besides, the Ridgeline has a great view of the surrounding land. Take the time to enjoy it! From that point on, you need to pace yourself. Don't rush. Slow and steady will earn you the peak. Hence you finally make it to the top of the trail, your climb is not over... but it is very minor. The true summit is on the Northeast side of the mountain. The climbers trail leaves you on the South side. It's an easy walk to the area, and again, it's a small climb. When you get up that...well...the view can't be described well enough. On a clear day, you will see a nice portion of the state. The most prominent view is to the North, where Middle and North Sisters look close enough to grab. It's a very rewarding experience.
  • 10,358ft, 6000ft gain over 6 miles to the summit. Leave early and don't take it for granted.
