#52 of 1,222 in Things to do in Virginia
Pay your respects to the Allied soldiers that participated in the 1944 invasion of Normandy at National D-Day Memorial. An English garden, victory plaza, and invasion tableau serve as a powerful tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who took part in the World War II battle. As the American town that suffered the greatest per-capita loss on D-Day, Bedford makes a fitting home for this important memorial, opened in 2001. Read the names of the residents who participated in the D-Day event alongside many more on tablets that border the Elmon T. Gray Plaza. The list includes all 4,413 fallen Allied soldiers, making it the most complete list of its kind in the world. Take a guided tour to learn more and read the information displays throughout the site. • A must go and see if you're in the area! Definitely take the tour if you're a history buff or not. The guides have some incredible knowledge and are worth listening to.
  • A fitting tribute to the fallen heros that helped liberate France and break the Nazi occupation. The grounds are well maintained, and the various monuments and statues are are exceptionally well crafted. A must see for anyone interested in honoring our brave military and for anyone who is interested in learning more about an important chapter in world history.
  • Absolutely beautiful place! Learned so much there. So thankful for our veterans and for serving and protecting our country. Awesome place, very respectful.
  • Patriotic memorial really gave chills! It has the most amazing volunteers! It is so well done and anyone who loves history this is a must see!!
  • It was a special day 23 years ago when my son and I brought my Dad on the 50th anniversary of the invasion to celebrate his survival of one of the world's bloodiest battles. We have been to memorials in DC and Honolulu together, but this is our favorite. It is a magnificent and moving tribute. Now, 73 years later we need more than ever to understand the threats we face in a troubled world and give thanks to those who preserved our way of life. This year we bring our grandchildren to Bedford to remember and give thanks. In my Dad's memory and to all those who serve. Thank you.
