  • Our tour through the mine was lead by a retired coal miner. He was very personable, funny, and it was great and unique opportunity to get a first-hand account of life in the mines. Aside from the ride...  more »

  • Well worth the time and money spent here. Allow yourself at least two hours to take everything in, more if you've got kids. The train trip through the mine is great and then the walk through of the different buildings is very enjoyable. The staff is extremely friendly and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend a stop here if you're in the area!
  • Very informative. Four attractions at same location. Actually go into a coal mine in a train/cart on rails, coal museum, example of typical (vintage) buildings in a WV coal town and a kids museum. Good place for families. Nice gift shop with appropriate to site.
  • Having an actual coal miner take us down in the mine and explain how we have gotten coal out of the ground through the ages was great! Seeing the tools and equipment used was cool. And where can you find a tourist location with t-shirts for $10? Go, you won't be disappointed!
  • A great look at a former mine exactly the way it was long ago. The guides are actual retired coal miners. You ride on narrow gauge cars pulled by a 1930s electric tow motor. They demonstrate how historic equipment like the tilly lamp was used. Great museum and coal mine town complete with one-room schoolhouse. The gift shop sells novelty helmets that light up. Great for West Virginia natives, or tourists from anywhere.
  • Mine tour is not for active children. My kids 6 & 8 years old were bored in the first 10 minutes. I enjoyed the informative tour thru the old mine. The other facilities at this location were great for kids.
