  • If you like navy or ship based history. Its a nice place to stop. Its not the Mobile Battleship by any means, but its also less crowded and more likely more entertaining for younger children.  more »

  • This is a WWII destroyer. A small but fast warship mainly used for submarine hunting. Nice self guided tour of just about the entire ship. Lots of helpful and knowledgable "sailors" on board to answer...  more »

  • The USS Kidd is a retired US Navy Destroyer (a large boat) that has been permanently docked in Baton Rouge. I visited because a) I was interested and b) it is one of the few museums outside of a handful that are open on Mondays in Baton Rouge. There is an inside museum which is a bit sparse, but has a few interesting exhibits. The highlight is definitely the boat itself. You get to give yourself a self-guided tour and are given a map and some information to accompany it. It was fascinating to see the ins and outs of such a ship and understand for a short while what people experienced in WWII (it's a 1940s era boat). Finally, understand that this is an old naval vessel. They've added some A/C to places but it's hot when it's hot out, there are plenty of tight spaces and very steep ladders. I couldn't see the elderly, those who have mobility issues or those with very small children enjoying it very much. Overall, I would highly recommend!
  • Cool trip back in time! Very informative about the military history of Louisiana
  • A Fantastically preserved ship! Please don't forget the donation box, as a museum volunteer for years( different museum ) , I know every little bit helps!
  • What an absolutely memorable experience. If the ship wasn't enough we met a veteran who served on it while we were visiting!
  • It's such a treat to be able to explore a real battle ship. Wear light athletic clothing when you visit, because there are lots of ladders to climb to see all the areas of the ship. It's self guided, but it's easy to follow the numbers to ensure you've seen everything that you can see on the ship.
