USS Kidd , a Fletcher-class destroyer, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named after Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who died on the bridge of his flagship USS Arizona during the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Admiral Kidd was the first US flag officer to die during World War II, and the first American admiral ever to be killed in action. A National Historic Landmark, she is now a museum ship, berthed on the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.World War IIKidd was launched 28 February 1943 by Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., Kearny, New Jersey; sponsored by Mrs. Isaac C. Kidd, widow of Rear Admiral Kidd, and commissioned 23 April 1943, Commander Allan Roby in command. During her initial cruise to the Brooklyn Naval Shipyards, she sailed across New York Harbor with the Jolly Roger flying from the foremast. Subsequently, during outfitting, her crew adopted the pirate captain William Kidd as their mascot, and commissioned a local artist to paint a pirate figure on the forward smokestack.

  • Had a great time visiting the USS Kid. Seeing what life on the ship is like is an eye opener. Some of the areas are definitely not meant for anyone who is claustrophobic. The museum inside is interest...  more »

  • The USS Kidd has been beautifully preserved and is an incredible sight to see. I would recommend going on a day when the volunteers are there to give tours, at their pace. I believe it was Friday but definitely give them a call to check and see which day they are offering this when you go. The destroyer along with the museum have been done extremely well and are managed by a fantastic team. I was lucky enough to attend their Veteran's Day Celebration last year and what an honor it was to meet all of those distinguished men and women.
  • What a moving memorial to our Servicemen. A hands on touch and feel tour of the USS Kidd. A must see when in Baton Rouge. Then walk the Memorial grounds, a very thought out space to reflect on our Nations past. the Museum inside is full of interesting military memorabilia, plan on at least 1/2 a day to enjoy everything at the USS Kidd Museum.
  • The museum was nice and the destroyer was well maintained. We had to do a self guided tour and the details were lacking in my opinion. Some of the other ships we have visited had an enormous amount of detail while touring the ship (if you wanted that). The USS Alabama being one that had a phone app with some really great info. Anyway, I gave a 4 and not 5 because of that but overall it was well done and worth the admission price. We had a Groupon but it was worth the normal price in my opinion. The WWI exhibit was very well done and I spent some time reading all the plaques. We were there for several hours.
  • A ww2 destroyer in its original configuration! Easy to follow self guide your takes you all over the ship. Great for kids and war buffs alike. Friendly volkunteers were on board who shared stories of their time in the service. Inside the adjacent building is a hall of local war heroes from various wars with their stories and some artifacts. Definitely worth checking out. Neat gift shop too.
  • Amazing piece of history. Pull your kids off their gaming system and take them here. Staff was great and very knowledgeable.
