Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, Barnegat Light

#2 of 6 in Nature in Jersey Shore
State Park Nature / Park
Barnegat Lighthouse State Park is located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. The area where the lighthouse stands was regarded as one of the most important navigational points for ships bound to and from New York Harbor. The ships were dependent upon the Barnegat Lighthouse to avoid the shoals extending from the shoreline. The swift currents, shifting sandbars, and offshore shoals challenged the skills of even the most experienced sailors. The park is included as a maritime site on the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail. The park is operated and maintained by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry.Barnegat LighthouseWith a panoramic view of the Island Beach, Barnegat Bay, and Long Beach Island, the lighthouse is a popular tourist site. The lighthouse is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day (weather permitting).FishingSaltwater fish can be caught along the bulkhead next to the picnic area. These fish include striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, summer flounder, tautog, winter flounder, and black sea bass. Access for the handicapped is available.

  • Old Barney is an awesome place. It's a bit of a climb to the top but the view is breathtaking! Great scenery even if you don't go up. Clean and well-maintained.
  • Sense of history, tranquility & more. There are areas for pets (not on the trails). Used to make the trip with a friend years ago to spend the day & take pictures of both sunrise & sunset. The place hasn't list it's charm. If you're on Long Beach Island, take the time; it's worth the trip.
  • Very nice light house and jetty to walk along. Can climb light house but requires cash. No ATM near area. Great area for fishing! Highly recommend if visiting Long Beach Island!
  • Great State park. Full access to the lighthouse is just $3. The volunteer staff is awesome. Leave the dog home, this area is in a natural state and is home to a robust tick population.
  • Only 217 steps to the top. If you are brave and want some exercise then this is a great lighthouse for you. They also have a little walking path near the water and off into the woods too.
