Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, Barnegat Light

(4.8/5 based on 360+ reviews on the web)
Barnegat Lighthouse State Park is located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. The area where the lighthouse stands was regarded as one of the most important navigational points for ships bound to and from New York Harbor. The ships were dependent upon the Barnegat Lighthouse to avoid the shoals extending from the shoreline. The swift currents, shifting sandbars, and offshore shoals challenged the skills of even the most experienced sailors. The park is included as a maritime site on the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail. The park is operated and maintained by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry.Barnegat LighthouseWith a panoramic view of the Island Beach, Barnegat Bay, and Long Beach Island, the lighthouse is a popular tourist site. The lighthouse is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day (weather permitting).FishingSaltwater fish can be caught along the bulkhead next to the picnic area. These fish include striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, summer flounder, tautog, winter flounder, and black sea bass. Access for the handicapped is available.

  • A great spot for an awesome view of the inlet and the Barnegat Light Ol' Barney Lighthouse! This is a pleasantly popular spot and great for families. I always run on the jetty rocks and it's a great workout!
  • Beautiful views, $3 to go up the lighthouse. The steps, albeit plenty, were easy to go up. It's in good condition, at no point did I feel it was unsafe. The surround park is beautiful and maintained well. Plenty of parking, I highly recommend it.
  • Beautiful! Has concrete walkway along inlet. Also nature path that shows pristine beauty of island before it was inhabited. Visitor center and bathroom. Dogs allowed on sand in off season....after September 15. (Watch out for prickly weeds called sand spurs.) No swimming beach. Small gift shop and ice cream store.
  • Amazing view just prepare yourself for the steps. one bonus once you get the top look out to the beach and there are hundreds of messages layed out in stones that can only be seen from above!
  • We always visit the park during our vacations on LBI. It's so much fun to climb the lighthouse and see the bay and the ocean. The kids make an adventure out of it. Also like to do some fishing off of the small beachy area and watch the boats come and go through the inlet. Check out the trails as well to learn a little history about the lighthouse.
