Barnegat Lighthouse State Park is located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. The area where the lighthouse stands was regarded as one of the most important navigational points for ships bound to and from New York Harbor. The ships were dependent upon the Barnegat Lighthouse to avoid the shoals extending from the shoreline. The swift currents, shifting sandbars, and offshore shoals challenged the skills of even the most experienced sailors. The park is included as a maritime site on the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail. The park is operated and maintained by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry.Barnegat LighthouseWith a panoramic view of the Island Beach, Barnegat Bay, and Long Beach Island, the lighthouse is a popular tourist site. The lighthouse is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day (weather permitting).FishingSaltwater fish can be caught along the bulkhead next to the picnic area. These fish include striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, summer flounder, tautog, winter flounder, and black sea bass. Access for the handicapped is available.

  • We are in our 50s so we were worried about the stairs, but we took it slow and boy were we glad! The views were spectacular and we got some great shots. Great history along the way up the landings whi...  read more »
  • I love lighthouses, Barnegat light is one of them . The inlet that it is one is one of the most treacherous on the East Coast. The light house is open to the public to go to the top of it, and what a ...  read more »

  • Beautiful views, $3 to go up the lighthouse. The steps, albeit plenty, were easy to go up. It's in good condition, at no point did I feel it was unsafe. The surround park is beautiful and maintained well. Plenty of parking, I highly recommend it.
  • We always visit the park during our vacations on LBI. It's so much fun to climb the lighthouse and see the bay and the ocean. The kids make an adventure out of it. Also like to do some fishing off of the small beachy area and watch the boats come and go through the inlet. Check out the trails as well to learn a little history about the lighthouse.
  • Great Park! Parking lot is free and $3.00 adult charging fee to climb up is a bargain. It was fun going up.. being a little scared of heights I was glad to find sections of where you can rest. Beautiful views from the top. btw.. If you are claustrophobic I don't recommend it. It gets tighter at the top. Picnic tables and a new gazebo are nice to have a picnic and enjoy watching the boats pass by. Great park to spend the day relaxing.
  • One of my favorite places to spend some time on LBI. It's not as busy as the beaches, and I love the laid back atmosphere.
  • It's a great place to bring the family or a first date. The scenery is stunning. There's a small, free museum, and for a small fee you can climb to the top of the lighthouse.
