Reynard Florence Vineyard, Barboursville
(4.6/5 based on 25+ reviews on the web)
There have been a lot of newcomers to Virginia wine over the last few decades and while Reynard Florence is only a few years old, founders and proprietors Roe and Dee Allison are no strangers to the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge.

Roe was born and raised in Somerset, Virginia, in Orange County and attended local schools. Dee and Roe met 40 years ago and courted while he was at the University of Virginia and she at Mary Baldwin College.

The two, purchased the land where Reynard Florence is located shortly after they were married in 1976. Roe and Dee built their house in 1980 which overlooks the vineyard today. The couple raised their two sons, who also attended local schools, in that home.

Instilled with a firm belief in maximizing the land's potential, Roe and Dee began planning a vineyard on the land where they had built their lives.

Roe and Dee attended Piedmont Virginia Community College's initial enology and viticulture programs. Graduating in 2006, they both hold certificates in Enology and Viticulture.

Believing that good wine starts in the vineyard, Roe drew from his experience in the building business and skill as a carpenter in planning the vineyard’s design. A high cordon wire to minimize frost, proper spacing for optimal growth, and high, layered guide wires that maximize sunlight and canopy management are all examples of the craftsmanship you'll find at Reynard Florence.

Breaking ground in April '06 with only one half acre Petit Manseng vines, Reynard Florence has since expanded to include over 1.5 acres of Grenache, Petit Verdot, and Merlot. Under the direction of veteran vineyard consultant Chris Hill and winemaker Michael Shaps, Reynard Florence’s premier vintage in 2009 of Petit Manseng reflected not only the Allison’s love for the region, but also the care that went into the vineyard’s design and vine maintenance.

  • We visited Reynard-Florence on our last tour day so I'm sorry to say I didn't have enough cash to take a bottle home from here. Definitely a little hidden jewel in Barboursville, and probably the best picnic spot I've ever seen. There's a pool out back but I'm not sure if it's just part of the house or an actual pool for when they have events - but even if not, between the beautiful patio and the breathtaking scenery, I can't imagine the locals need anywhere else to spend a Friday night. Don't forget to tip the four-legged greeter a couple belly rubs before you leave.
  • Great wines especially their Petit Manseng, which is our favorite but in limited supply. We always enjoy stopping by on a Sunday afternoon when there might be a little pickin' going on.
  • Wonderful. We stopped in right at closing, we were greeted like family. Sampled great wines, and were entertained by the owner, and friends as they played for us. We bought a couple bottles, and look forward to going back.
  • Great wine from top to bottom. We especially liked the reds.
  • Wonderful winery, great company, and the wines are first rate. How can you go wrong with folks who name a wine after their grandson?
