Reynard Florence Vineyard, Barboursville

#100 of 163 in Wineries in Virginia
There have been a lot of newcomers to Virginia wine over the last few decades and while Reynard Florence is only a few years old, founders and proprietors Roe and Dee Allison are no strangers to the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge.

Roe was born and raised in Somerset, Virginia, in Orange County and attended local schools. Dee and Roe met 40 years ago and courted while he was at the University of Virginia and she at Mary Baldwin College.

The two, purchased the land where Reynard Florence is located shortly after they were married in 1976. Roe and Dee built their house in 1980 which overlooks the vineyard today. The couple raised their two sons, who also attended local schools, in that home.

Instilled with a firm belief in maximizing the land's potential, Roe and Dee began planning a vineyard on the land where they had built their lives.

Roe and Dee attended Piedmont Virginia Community College's initial enology and viticulture programs. Graduating in 2006, they both hold certificates in Enology and Viticulture.

Believing that good wine starts in the vineyard, Roe drew from his experience in the building business and skill as a carpenter in planning the vineyard’s design. A high cordon wire to minimize frost, proper spacing for optimal growth, and high, layered guide wires that maximize sunlight and canopy management are all examples of the craftsmanship you'll find at Reynard Florence.

Breaking ground in April '06 with only one half acre Petit Manseng vines, Reynard Florence has since expanded to include over 1.5 acres of Grenache, Petit Verdot, and Merlot. Under the direction of veteran vineyard consultant Chris Hill and winemaker Michael Shaps, Reynard Florence’s premier vintage in 2009 of Petit Manseng reflected not only the Allison’s love for the region, but also the care that went into the vineyard’s design and vine maintenance.

  • Great stop if you're on a winery tour and need a place in Orange Co or you're near 29N. The owners are very personable and talk to the customers like friends. They have an adorable corgi, too. Small venue where you'll feel welcome and be pleasantly surprised with their awesome varieties of wine!
  • Great place to visit for wine lovers, owners are personable, very great white and red wines! Pretty tasting room!
  • This place is great! A little hidden away Vineyard, their wine is delicious and the owner and his wife Florence are so hospitable! Tastings are informative, we'll structured, and I dare you not to buy a bottle!
  • Dee the owner is lovely and took the time to explain each wine to us and the flavors we were tasting in them. Loved the history of their property and LOVED all the foxes. Très belle!
  • Pretty place, charming staff, nice wines. Steep climb to get out (unpaved driveway) was a little challenging after tasting.
