Land Bridge to Bar Island, Bar Harbor

(4.6/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web)
Take a walk across Land Bridge to Bar Island, exposed only during low tide. The uninhabited tidal island, part of a national park, becomes accessible to walkers and bikers for about three hours each day when the gravel harbor seafloor is exposed. The "bar" connects the island to the town on the mainland during this short period. Once on the island, you can explore a network of trails and several scenic overlooks providing views of the town across the water. To avoid being unable to cross back to the mainland once the water rises, be sure to time your hike with low tide. Check online for a chart providing exact low tide times for this area. • We actually drove our car out on to the land bridge, which was kind of cool. We didn't go all the way across to explore the island, as the tide was starting to come back in. A nice memory.  more »
  • Low tide for us was in the evening which was perfect! It's a very popular spot so get there as soon as the tide is low. The kids really enjoyed looking for rocks and seashells. We made across to the i...  more »
  • This is a great walk. Make sure to check the tide chart before heading out. There are a lot of tide pools to find some sea animals. Also a great place to look for sea glass.  more »
