Land Bridge to Bar Island, Bar Harbor

Landmark · Tourist Spot
Take a walk across Land Bridge to Bar Island, exposed only during low tide. The uninhabited tidal island, part of a national park, becomes accessible to walkers and bikers for about three hours each day when the gravel harbor seafloor is exposed. The "bar" connects the island to the town on the mainland during this short period. Once on the island, you can explore a network of trails and several scenic overlooks providing views of the town across the water. To avoid being unable to cross back to the mainland once the water rises, be sure to time your hike with low tide. Check online for a chart providing exact low tide times for this area. • This was fun to watch from our hotel room, and the kids enjoyed exploring during the walk over. Definitely a unique experience.  more »
  • This is the coolest! Walking across water during low tide to an island. So much to explore on the sand bar as well as the island. The hike on the island is a little over a mile, so make sure you plan....  more »
  • Loved exploring the path once the water receded. We hiked the trail on the island which was great. Little kids would really love exploring the path - finding shells, snails, and such.  more »

  • I loved this place. It was a unique way of passing through a nature made bridge. Don't miss this experience especially when high tide happens. Just be careful not to get trapped in the island or you will have to wait for 9 hours to be able to get back to Bar Harbour again.
  • Nice walk out to the island at low tide.
  • Excellent walking experience on the ocean bottom during low tide. And also to walk to Bar Island.
  • Had a great time my daughter still talks about it and wants to go back. Pay parking is available along the road running parallel to the shore downtown. There is an island you can walk to at low tide with a hiking trail and some great views. Found lots of star fish near the shore and you can Kayak as well bring your own or rent.
  • Fun place to visit and catch the ride going out or in. You will love looking in all the little pools for different things. Kids can explore safely and if you like take a little time to explore the island. Set a timer because you don’t want to get caught on the island when the tide comes in.
