Abbe Museum, Bar Harbor

3.9
#1 of 8 in Museums in DownEast and Acadia Maine
Learn about Maine's Native American history at Abbe Museum, featuring more than 50,000 artifacts. Dating from the Paleoindian period to present times, these objects include everything from stone-based materials like knives, axes, and fishing weights to bone objects like combs, needles, and harpoons. Check out ancient pottery and jewelry, and don't miss the original canoe or the 3,000-year-old flute made from a swan bone. Consider choosing a souvenir from the Native American arts and crafts and educational books at the gift shop before leaving. • Educational celebration of the First Nation. Beautifully done Smithsonian museum with knowledgeable staff and gift shop.
  • Museum about the art and cultural heritage, past, present and future of Wabanaki people. Downtown location mostly centers on their art, weaving, and who they are today. Sieur de Mont Spring location is all about the archaeology, arrowheads, and pre-contact past. Visiting Downtown first gets you into SDM location free, Visiting SDM location first gets you a discount on Downtown tickets- but its not free. Go to Downtown first. Not really great for small children, but older kids and those interested in Native American history and the regional/state history of Maine should go.
  • Interesting small museum.
