Scenic Walking Area Tourist Spot
Explore Baltimore's vibrant neighborhoods and rich history and discover how the city's past helped forge America's identity.

The Baltimore National Heritage Area includes the heart of Baltimore—its central and oldest neighborhoods, downtown and waterfront—and innumerable heritage, cultural, and natural resources. The national heritage area features world-renowned art and cultural museums, vibrant neighborhoods shaped by patterns of immigration, elegant urban squares and plazas, and expansive parks. At the center of the city is the Inner Harbor, one of the oldest seaports in the nation and today a vibrant destination for tourists and residents alike. Baltimore’s dramatic role in the War of 1812 can be explored at numerous historic sites, including Fort McHenry, where a defiant nation rose against invasion and defended independence.

In addition to Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, the city’s 24 National Historic Landmarks include the USS Constellation, the Flag House and Star-Spangled Banner Museum, Mount Vernon Historic District, and the B&O Railroad Museum. Baltimore boasts an impressive array of historic structures: more than 276 designated districts or landmarks comprising over 53,000 individual properties on the National Register of Historic Places.

Where to stay in Baltimore

For quick and easy access to practically all of Baltimore's major attractionswhile on holiday, follow the example of most tourists and stay near the Inner Harbor neighborhood. Few cities boast such a well-defined tourist district, it shouldn't come as a surprise that all the major chain hotels in the city are located right in this busy neighborhood.
