Its purpose was to provide a place to both educate the public about native wildlife, as well as to help injured and orphaned wild animals. Those that could be released into the wild would be, while others would be cared for in the facility. A campaign went out to many service organizations to sponsor buildings within the facility. • I am not a lover of zoos, but all the animals and birds here have some sort of disability that prevents them from being released back into the wild. The pair of condors were especially interesting. Ta...  more »
  • It's so relaxing and we enjoy all the animals. My sister who had a stroke when she was 29 loved all the animals and loved being outside. The hardest part was pushing the wheelchair. You need to have s...  more »
  • We will return more often. We loved the fact that we actually saw all the animals here in the park. Unlike the large zoos where the animals stay out of sight.  more »

  • We have been many times and my kids always love it! It's beautifully landscaped and weddings can be held here as well. They recently added a marine aspect with a hands on small structure where you can touch some salt water creatures and an in wall jellyfish tank. It's not large at all so when there are a lot of people it's hard to get in there. Good place to go and just walk around see animals and kiddos have a play area. A train ride is offered and they have holiday lights at Christmas time
  • Pretty cool especially for being in the middle of nowhere. A good 45 min leg stretching on my way to LA - my kid certainly loved it. Good place for picnic too.
  • Great place. Not only a Zoo, but a wildlife refuge. The CALM Christmas lights are amazing. Very inexpensive to get in.
  • CALM is the best zoo Bakersfield has to offer. So... do not expect much live entertainment, usually. A lot of the animals are nocturnal (like the skunks) and won't show their cute little faces in public unless they are being fed. That said... Visiting CALM is great for a peaceful retreat away from the hectic city life.
  • Would have gave it 5 stars but the best and cats weren't available to see as they were cleaning cages. Or her than that what a great place in Bakersfield for the littles!
