The Contemporary Austin - Laguna Gloria, formerly known as the AMOA-Arthouse at Laguna Gloria, is the former home of Clara Driscoll and site of a 1916 Italianate-style villa on the shores of Lake Austin in Austin, Texas. It was the original home of the Austin Museum of Art and still houses some of its collections. The building is now one of two sites of The Contemporary Austin. The building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.HistoryBefore the influx of white settlers, Native Americans visited the site for its nearby spring . The land that includes the property was originally owned by Stephen F. Austin, who in 1832 wrote that he wished to build a home there. This never came to pass.In 1914 the property was purchased by Hal Sevier, editor of the Austin American, with his new wife Clara Driscoll. They completed their villa two years later, inspired by a honeymoon visit to Lake Como in Italy. Clara, an avid gardener, spent many years planting native and foreign plants around the site and designing the terraced gardens that remain to this day. In 1943 Driscoll donated the homesite to be used as a city museum. In 1961, the site was converted to the Laguna Gloria Art Museum and became an important part of the Austin arts scene. Soon after, the museum began offering art classes, and in 1983, a 5300sqft facility was built specifically for the growing art school.

  • Fantastic museum with low admission fees. They even participate in Bank of America's Museums on Us program. Friendly staff and the outdoor sculpture garden is initially confusing but once you orient yourself, it's pretty easy. Lots of cool and unique pieces. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
  • One of the best kept secrets in terms of tourist stops in Austin. The grounds are beautiful, and the space really is wonderful for special events, or just a quiet morning walk on the grounds. Don't miss seeing the peacocks at Mayfield Park just nextdoor.
  • I attended the Indie House Events launch at this beautiful venue. The parking is street parking so for bigger events I am unsure if they offer a different option but, I would opt for valet parking if you are having a wedding or classier affair. The grounds are gorgeous but, make sure you tell your guests to wear flats or shoes they can walk down stairs and across unpaved areas. The view at the bottom near the water is impeccable. I could see a beautiful wedding taking place here especially since they have a section for a ceremony with tiered seating for optimal views and picture taking options for all guests. I imagine that the area that we were in, which as water view access, would be great for a tented reception. I didn't see any bathroom options so, I can't comment on that but, overall this is a very beautiful venue with well manicured lawns that worked great for the event that I was at and I am sure it would for many others. It definitely has many photo op areas with lush greenery!
  • Perfect place for couples, families with kids who want to create something artsy or just walk around!
  • This place is such a great place to bring out of town friends. The house and natural surroundings is just amazing. Puts me in a good mood every time. Dogs are welcome to come with outside if they are on a leash. Tuesdays are their free days which is cool, they do accept donations though! The featured art changes through the year as well.
