  • Excellent military museum that covers the US history from the very early Spanish conquistadors to modern day. Emphasis is on the contribution of Texas and Texans over the years. Different displays, vehicles, weapons, & memorabilia from different conflicts. Museum is on Camp Mabry and is FREE! Indoor exhibit is air conditioned and has a lot of really great stuff. Alamo exhibit tries to dispel myths but admits that there is limited "real" detail available. Lots of tanks & artillery outside so in the summer it's hot but there is a little shade.
  • Awe inspiring, from stories of the Lost Battalion to Fort Donnelson. There is a new section with many regimental Confederate flags preserved. Very well done! (Except the founding of Jamestown was in 1607, not 1608.)
  • Great Museum!!! I had no idea this was in Austin. Their reenactment battle on Memorial Day is something you can't miss! Pyro, tanks and machine guns along with a great history lesson. Really helped tell the story of why Memorial Day is so important, it definitely gave me a new respect for all those who have fought for us.
  • Excellent free museum on Camp Mabry base. The people working there are extremely knowledge and can provide even more stories behind some of the artifacts. The collection of military vehicles is also impressive.
  • Absolutely fascinating!! Free to visit, and super friendly staff. Visit if you have the opportunity to, even if you have to drive a bit to get there. It's worth it.

Where to stay in Austin

Austin bills itself as the "Live Music Capital of the World," so it shouldn't come as a surprise that many of its hotels sell out long before the city's popular festivals. If you wish to stay near downtown's live music scene, look for package deals and book your accommodations well in advance. If downtown clubs and bars aren't your priority, consider hotels located just outside the central part of town, in comfortable areas where you won't need a car to get to most of the city's major cultural sites.
