The 507-acre Jay C. Hormel Nature Center preserve was established in 1971 and is located in Western Mower County within the city limits of Austin. The Nature Center features restored and remnant prairie, hardwood forest, wetlands and meandering streams. As you hike the ten miles of trail, you may see deer, mink, raccoons, salamanders, birds and other native wildlife.

  • This is about the best hiking you are going to get for Mower County. It is good for going for shorter hour or less walks and they are going to be opening a new visitor center there also. Good place to...  more »
  • We walked here on Thanksgiving and again the next day. There were very few other walkers. We loved the tall prairie grasses and the variety of landscapes we could walk through.  more »

  • Beautiful spot, great new interpretive center. Well worth a visit.
  • Beautiful place they keep it amazing and have done some nice upgrades!!
  • Love the outdoor trails and live animals and indoor exhibits!
  • Usually quiet, pretty short nature trails, tons of snapping turtles. My kids like climbing the rock out front more than anything.
