Haunted Pillar, Augusta

2.1
Here's the story on this local historical attraction:

In the late 1800's, the policemen of Augusta told a Preacher that he would need to discontinue preaching in the "market place".

The Preacher was furious and told everyone that he would curse the market and all of it would be destroyed. Well, soon after, a tornado hit Augusta, GA (which is incredibly rare since Augusta is in a deep valley) and completely wiped out the market place, except for a lone "pillar".

A grocer bought the "pillar" for 50 dollars and moved the "pillar" to 5th & Broad St. ( late 1800's). He died shortly after that and the people of Augusta believed that it had been because of the "Preacher's Curse".

Many versions of the story has been passed down from generation to generation, and the story continues to this day... "Anyone attempting to move the Pillar will die of mysterious circumstances shortly after."

  • A fun tourist attraction. Especially if you know the history and story behind it!
  • Just a random pillar. Not worth a stop, just a drive by and a quick Wikipedia check.
