The Maine State Museum is the official Maine government's museum and is located at 230 State Street, adjacent to the Maine State House, in Augusta. The current director of the Museum is Bernard Fishman.Labor history mural controversyIn January 2013, the Museum agreed to display the controversial labor mural removed from the Maine Department of Labor's lobby by Governor Paul LePage in 2011. Fishman had approached the Department of Labor about displaying the mural after its own search for a location on its property was not successful. A spokeswoman for the Department of Labor stated that the new location would have better security and more viewership. The governor and the artist, Judy Taylor, approved of the new location. The agreement between the Department of Labor and the Museum provides for a three-year, renewable loan. The department retains ownership of the mural, as transferring ownership would require federal approval because federal money was used to finance it. The Museum hopes to make the mural a part of its collection.

  • Spent an hour here and could have stayed longer. There are exhibits here detailing all of Maine's industries; fishing, logging, granite, textiles, milling. We also enjoyed the natural exhibits.  more »

  • This place is outstanding! Filled with everything you'd want to know about Maine and is extremely well done. This is a museum you would expect to see in a higher-end location like Boston. So much to see. Good staff. Can't say enough about how great it is and so cost affective. Props for the wonderful contribution to Maine history
  • We love coming here. We have gone many times over the years with our 3 kids and no matter what age they are they still love it. It is a quick little trip to get out of the house. You also can't beat the price- Adults $3.00, Children ages 6-18 $2.00, Children under 6 free with a maximum family charge of $10.00. Its a great place to go and wander around for a few hours and learn some pretty interesting facts/history about the great state of Maine.
  • Fun and interesting small museum. The small gauge steam engine and shipwreck just inside the door alone are worth the price of admission.
  • Knowledgeable staff and so many cool exhibits. A wide variety will keep the entire family interested!
  • Lots of wonderful displays about the history of Maine. Very entertaining & informative.
