The historical fortification at Fort Macon State Park is surrounded by unspoiled nature and wonderful beaches. The fort was built in 1826 and is now fully restored, from the outer defenses to the inner chambers. Explore the fort on your own, then visit the museum room to learn about its history. You also can opt for a guided tour. Outside the fort, the park sets the stage for swimming, hiking, fishing, and picnicking. A bathhouse and concession stand are open during warmer months, while the picnic area and restrooms are accessible year-round. • This was a good way to spend a few hours exploring the area. The Fort is not large but has a unique history. It is well worth the stop and time to tour. There is no admission fee's to NC State Parks.  more »

  • A fabulous historic site to visit. The tour and walking around the fort was fun, informational, and inspiring. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The history is very interesting. On the other side of the parking lot is a terrific clean beach with sand wheelchairs available for the handicapped to be able to go to the beach and see the ocean.
  • This is a preserved fort used in several wars. The entrance has plenty of parking, a gift shop, bathrooms, etc. Yes it's free to enter and explore. The inside of the fort has several rooms with artifacts, historical details, and what each room was used for. One had air conditioning but I can't remember what room that was. The top grounds of the fort has several cannon turret things, great views, and the grounds are well maintained. I think the views of the ocean are understated in all of this. If you are into NC maritime history or just want to walk around in awe of the vastness and preservation of the fort, give it a go. Good job NC.
  • Great place for a one day trip! One can explore the fort and watch the documentary about it for free, which may take around an hour or two. If you want to hike, Elliott Couse nature trail is there...the Atlantic Beach...pretty clean and not much crowded even on weekend. There are free parking lots for both, the fort and the beach. Beach has public access from the beach parking.
  • Had not visited Ft. Macon in several years but wanted to bring my grandsons to experience the canon firing, which I had never seen either. There was a large crowd that afternoon that eagerly awaited the canon blast. It was quite impressive standing there looking out across the ocean and imagining what it must have felt like when the fort was actually under enemy fire! The boys absolutely LOVED it. My first time also to see the new visitors center which I was equally impressed with. So glad to see the bird exhibit with the hawk and bald eagle. The play area for children is also a very nice addition. Cudos to the State for taking such care and pride in our parks!
  • This park was educational and relaxing. The veiws from the top were astounding! We watched a 30 min video of the history of Fort Macon and there's a museum to walk through. It's free. There is a gift shop where I bought a few Atlantic Beach/Cape Lookout souvenirs.
