State Park Nature / Park
The historical fortification at Fort Macon State Park is surrounded by unspoiled nature and wonderful beaches. The fort was built in 1826 and is now fully restored, from the outer defenses to the inner chambers. Explore the fort on your own, then visit the museum room to learn about its history. You also can opt for a guided tour. Outside the fort, the park sets the stage for swimming, hiking, fishing, and picnicking. A bathhouse and concession stand are open during warmer months, while the picnic area and restrooms are accessible year-round. • May 2001- i & mom went to visit Fort Macon State Park. That's awesome so beautiful views beach and forts too. Free admission go in. Enjoy walk around see historic war place and place. Have gift shop too. June 2003- my family first time there and i & mom again visit tour now 2 times. I'm fall loved forts so fun good time. 💜😘
  • This was such an awesome experience... There was a free tour of the Fort that was informative and interesting! Yay for free & quality! The visitor center has been renovated and there is A/C and two exhibits about the ecology in the area, a movie, and large gift shop. The Fort itself and the tour were so neat... The guide made it intriguing. On Wednesdays at 4 p.m. they shoot of the cannons. I would say bring ear plugs if you're gonna observe it. The history was rich and there are rooms that have original artifacts and depict what life was like at different times throughout it's history. I would go back to explore more... plus it is also completely free...
  • Great place been coming 40 plus years, love the new waking trails amazing views. Bring a camera and I would start on the beach side trail first it is more open and has some very nice sand dunes that trail warps around and goes on top. Then the sound side you enter the maritime forests nice and flat with a lot of shade just beautiful. You will not be disappointed. All together about 4 miles if you add a little walking inside the Fort. Also great place to start is at the public beach on the right as you enter the Fort grounds. Good picnic tables in that area along with charcoal grills.
  • Had a great time touring the fort and walking on the beach. Will be back for the nature trails. Dog-friendly. About half a day or can pack a lunch and hang out on the beach for the day. Has restrooms.
  • This is a must-visit if you're in the area. The beach is beautiful, and the fort was more fun than I expected. It's very well-preserved, and there are a ton of interesting and informative exhibits. Bring bug repellent, though. I was attacked by mosquitoes every step of the way while I was there.
