State Park
The historical fortification at Fort Macon State Park is surrounded by unspoiled nature and wonderful beaches. The fort was built in 1826 and is now fully restored, from the outer defenses to the inner chambers. Explore the fort on your own, then visit the museum room to learn about its history. You also can opt for a guided tour. Outside the fort, the park sets the stage for swimming, hiking, fishing, and picnicking. A bathhouse and concession stand are open during warmer months, while the picnic area and restrooms are accessible year-round. • We have been coming here since we were children. It's been upgraded with a welcome center. It's still free and a nice way to send a few hours learning about history.  more »

  • Ever since I was very little my family and I have came to this state park. I love the history behind this fort and love to learn about it every time I come back. The views are breathtaking the trails are worth the hike. This state park is very family oriented and educational. I recommend this to all.
  • This free park offers a great visitors center asking with the opportunity to explore an interesting historical site. The movie is a great way to get an introduction to the long history of the fort and it's place in North Carolina and US history. The museum offers a chance to get up close with both the history and the ecology of the site. I especially enjoyed the use of first hand accounts to make it easy to connect with the people of fort Macon. The fort itself would be challenging for anyone with mobility challenges and the fence free edges require close supervision of young children. Older children and adults though with enjoy the chance to walk through the fort, up on the battlements and through the many exhibits. Time your visit to coincide with a tour and get in depth information about the site. If you are in the area, this is a must visit attraction.
  • If you've been on vacation in the area, you've most likely been here. We visit on every trip just to take in a new aspect of the park. The fort is interesting, and as our kid grows up, she finds more and more things of interest. Cannon ceremonies in the evening are worth checking out. Coast Guard does an excellent job describing the artillery and of course it ends with a bang. If you haven't been in many years, be sure to check out the new Visitor's Center.
  • Best beach ever!! Not crowded. Has fresh water faucets to rinse off, great parking, bathrooms and plenty of picnic areas
  • I've been here as a child and it was nice to bring my own. There are guided tours, but you can also wander around on your own without one and enjoy your experience. The park does remind visitors that the fort was made for war, not safety. The drop offs can be sudden, so be careful with letting your young ones (or you for that matter) run around without situational awareness.
