The historical fortification at Fort Macon State Park is surrounded by unspoiled nature and wonderful beaches. The fort was built in 1826 and is now fully restored, from the outer defenses to the inner chambers. Explore the fort on your own, then visit the museum room to learn about its history. You also can opt for a guided tour. Outside the fort, the park sets the stage for swimming, hiking, fishing, and picnicking. A bathhouse and concession stand are open during warmer months, while the picnic area and restrooms are accessible year-round. • Really enjoyed the Ft and could see the pride of the community that works there and keeps it up. Nice trails and easy access. Loved it!
  • We loved the beach and water here. The facilities are nice and clean as well. There is a snack bar...but it only has chips and drinks and food.
  • This free park offers a great visitors center asking with the opportunity to explore an interesting historical site. The movie is a great way to get an introduction to the long history of the fort and it's place in North Carolina and US history. The museum offers a chance to get up close with both the history and the ecology of the site. I especially enjoyed the use of first hand accounts to make it easy to connect with the people of fort Macon. The fort itself would be challenging for anyone with mobility challenges and the fence free edges require close supervision of young children. Older children and adults though with enjoy the chance to walk through the fort, up on the battlements and through the many exhibits. Time your visit to coincide with a tour and get in depth information about the site. If you are in the area, this is a must visit attraction.
  • Loved this place! Great historical site to visit! It was nice to spend the day here, would recommend anyone traveling this area to stop. You won't regret it and it is a FREE activity for your family.
  • Love the place. It is rich with Civil War and WW II history. The fort is located behind the visitors center. Expect a lot of walking. Bring water in a backpack as water is not allowed in the visitors center. If you plan to visit the Atlantic Beach, don't miss this spot, it's only a few miles down the road and it's free.
  • Beautiful piece of history. Awesome spot with lots of interactive places in the old barracks. Steps are steep to get up to the top but well worth the amazing panoramic views. Clean bathrooms and a small snack and gift shop too.
  • This is one of the best state parks I have ever been to. It is kept immaculately clean, and the fort has been extremely well preserved. It also has a great gift shop.
