The historical fortification at Fort Macon State Park is surrounded by unspoiled nature and wonderful beaches. The fort was built in 1826 and is now fully restored, from the outer defenses to the inner chambers. Explore the fort on your own, then visit the museum room to learn about its history. You also can opt for a guided tour. Outside the fort, the park sets the stage for swimming, hiking, fishing, and picnicking. A bathhouse and concession stand are open during warmer months, while the picnic area and restrooms are accessible year-round. • I've been here several times over the past several years, and they always seem to have added something or improved upon something. It's always well maintained, with a lot of things to learn and see. There's even an area more directed at kids that offers more hands on information such as playing with seashells or using a machine to see how tides work. Honestly, I think what I most appreciate about this park is that they've tried to keep it as genuine as possible. As several signs warn, this fort was built for war, not safety. Examples of this are that they allow you to walk for the most part where you wish to, there are steep steps, etc. While it is very well maintained and there are no aspects of the park I felt were unsafe, parents need to keep an eye on their kids to make sure they are able to explore while still remaining safe.
  • This really is like stepping back in time. A great place to visit with the whole family. The updates made in the last 15 years are great. Good amount of displays and learning opportunities.
  • Best fort I've been to. Not just well restored, but many of the old rooms are set up to represent original use. Many exhibits too. Highly recommended!
  • What a great spot. Everything you would expect from a National Park and more. We visited during the week but found everything open and available (read bathrooms ). Well situated on the beach and plenty of pavilions and parking.
  • Best fort I've been to. Wonderfully restored and many exhibits. In addition, half of the casemates (rooms) have been set up to recreate their original use. Highly recommended!
