4.8/5 based on 380+ reviews on the web
Discover the rich Civil War history of Fort Macon, which features a fully restored brick and stone military fort. Surrounded on three sides by water, the park sits at the eastern end of a long barrier island just off North Carolina's mainland. You can sign up for a guided tour of the military establishment or do a self-guided tour using a guide available at the bookstore on site. Although the majority of the park's 1.3 million annual visitors come to see the fort's 26 vaulted rooms, the surrounding area offers abundant opportunities to swim, surf, fish, hike, and cycle. The natural areas of the island shelter a range of coastal ecosystems, serving as nesting grounds for several species of sea, marsh, and shore birds. The park offers guided bird-watching tours, hiking trips, and astronomy lessons. Plan your visit to Fort Macon and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Atlantic Beach trip builder.

  • Excellent attraction, tours are offered. Everything is free, they accept donations. Figure on spending about two hours to see everything.
  • TIP - start by watching the first rate movie (22 minutes) before touring. TIP - check out the gift shop. TIP - take time to read the exhibit signs, very insightful to the past and what life was like a...  read more »
  • This free park offers a great visitors center asking with the opportunity to explore an interesting historical site. The movie is a great way to get an introduction to the long history of the fort and it's place in North Carolina and US history. The museum offers a chance to get up close with both the history and the ecology of the site. I especially enjoyed the use of first hand accounts to make it easy to connect with the people of fort Macon. The fort itself would be challenging for anyone with mobility challenges and the fence free edges require close supervision of young children. Older children and adults though with enjoy the chance to walk through the fort, up on the battlements and through the many exhibits. Time your visit to coincide with a tour and get in depth information about the site. If you are in the area, this is a must visit attraction.
  • Loved this place! Great historical site to visit! It was nice to spend the day here, would recommend anyone traveling this area to stop. You won't regret it and it is a FREE activity for your family.
  • Love the place. It is rich with Civil War and WW II history. The fort is located behind the visitors center. Expect a lot of walking. Bring water in a backpack as water is not allowed in the visitors center. If you plan to visit the Atlantic Beach, don't miss this spot, it's only a few miles down the road and it's free.
  • Beautiful piece of history. Awesome spot with lots of interactive places in the old barracks. Steps are steep to get up to the top but well worth the amazing panoramic views. Clean bathrooms and a small snack and gift shop too.
  • This is one of the best state parks I have ever been to. It is kept immaculately clean, and the fort has been extremely well preserved. It also has a great gift shop.
