The Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Atlanta

4.7
#7 of 11 in Historic Sites in Atlanta
Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the second oldest structure in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Designed by local architect Wiiliam H. Parkins, the cornerstone was laid September 1, 1869 by poet Abram Joseph Ryan. It was completed and dedicated in 1873 and is still in use. It replaced a frame structure on the same site that was famously saved from the burning of the city in 1864.

“Don't Walk By Without Visiting” Having lived in Atlanta most of my life, I am surprised I never visited this beautiful shrine until now. The rich history, the stunning architecture, and the detailed stained glass features make this a true treasure of our city.

Where to stay in Atlanta

Most of Atlanta's top hotels cluster in a downtown area with an easy-to-remember name--the Hotel District. The city's political and commercial hub, this area offers quick walking access to most major attractions. Another good area for boutique hotels and rental apartments is the ever-expanding Midtown, with proximity to most of Atlanta's big-name museums and theaters. If you're looking to save some money on accommodations, explore options in the more economical chain hotels outside downtown; from there, you can take the city's public transport to centrally located attractions and activities.
