Bear Hollow Zoo, Athens

4.7
#2 of 6 in Parks in Athens
Bear Hollow is a facility of the ACC Department of Leisure Services. Since it's creation in the late 1940's, the zoo has undergone many changes having started as a private collection of wild animals, which had been donated to the Athens zoo. Currently, the zoo contains only non-releasable native wildlife housed in natural habitat exhibits. The zoo is always growing and changing thanks to community support through volunteers and donations, yet it always remains committed to conservation through the education of its visitors. By educating the public, by allowing even one person to forge a lasting connection with an animal, Bear Hollow helps motivate people to protect wildlife and the habitats that they depend upon.

Bear Hollow relies heavily upon donations and the commitment of many volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering or helping the zoo in any way, please contact us!

  • A Zoo, which costs no admission can be anything. Dalton! A really sweet, small zoo with some recovered and some injured animals. Especially with small children a great fun. I never expected z.B with an alligator. There are also black bears, a Lynx. Sure that the Zoo costs no admission, he's great. Tip: at the entrance there is a DIN A4 paper for a self-guided tour. Really highly recommended, you can learn what about the history of animals, etc.

  • A wonderful place tucked away in Athens. It was a relaxing learning experience for us. Info cards to learn about the animals and you learn all their names. We loved it and will definitely visit again.
  • Wonderful place for bringing kids for a zoo experience. Adults great walking area - wear comfortable shoes. Bring your own water - not many vend areas except at pool.
  • Great little zoo to bring the kids to explore the wildlife of the State of Georgia. Also use to be a great date location to show off that you're in touch with nature.
  • This is a cute, little, public zoo open to the public. You don't pay anything to go in and walk around. All the animals are rescues and seem well taken care of. The enclosures looked tidy. The zoo walkways were clean, and they were playing Jack Johnson in the background. It was an overall enjoyable experience.
  • The coolest little park zoo. Free and has a few really neat animals. Great little stop for the kids or just a relaxing day out. Self guided tour.
